my 2+ yrs eh75 has suddenly developed a problem: it shuts down (BYE displayed) after about 30 seconds of powering. no error messages and works fine during these 30 seconds. also it takes longer to power up.

i have checked the remote and ruled out any false "off" commands being sent by the remote.

any help?

thanks

Check the capacitors in the power supply section. On some hard drive models these capacitors are found under the hard drive platform. There are can type and disc type capacitors in the power supply. See this post and several that follow it for more information and photos:

If power supply capacitors are the problem but you are not comfortable with performing your own repair the corporate Panasonic Service Center in Elk Grove Village Illinois has a $130 flat-rate repair that includes parts, labor and return shipping. These Panasonic experts will return your DMR-EH75 to new or better than new functional condition. See this thread for more information:

I have a EH-55(lacks the VHS on the EH-75) and a Sony LCD, hooked up via HDMI. They both communicate via HDMI and if I turn off my TV while my EH-55 is playing the TV automatically turns the EH-55 off. Note it should not do this when you're recording on the EH-55, just playing. Other than disconnecting the HDMI cable you can also just turn off the HDMI control in your TV or the EH-75. I do this when I'm doing a DVD copy and don't want to watch the copying. My DVD player is also HDMI and it will shut off otherwise when I turn my TV off.

Automatic controls are nice 98% of the time but then there are times when it's nice to turn it off

Should you ever need service be sure not to take your Panasonic to a local "authorized" repair shop. The linked post will provide the reasons why Elk Grove Village is the only place to service/repair a Panasonic under warranty or out-of-warranty.

I am in Oregon. When I sent one of my Panasonics to Illinois for repair it was returned to new functional condition and back into my hands within two weeks.

Well, if you don't need the tuner, and just want to record through the line inputs, there's the Panasonic EH57 and EH67 from places like World-Import and B&H Photo. Pretty much the same as the North American EH55 without the NTSC tuner (PAL-only).

If you do need the NTSC tuner, there are Canadian and international Pioneer HDD models and a Canadian and Sony HDD model with it (the international Pio's have "TV Guide Plus", but their version doesn't work in N. America).

None have the TVGOS system which will work in the US. As you've found, nothing out there does. I just got a brand new E55 off of eBay - and it has our TVGOS system - but it wasn't nearly as cheap as the international models. You could look there. There were a couple still available when I got mine last week. Probably be better just to get yours fixed for the $130.00 flat rate, though, if you can't live without that TVGOS feature.

By the way, I have my EH75V hooked up to my Pio Elite plasma through HDMI (Monoprice, of course), and I've never had any problems.

Do you have any HDMI control with that setup? That is when you bring your NAV screen up on your Panny will it switch your Pio to the correct HDMI input?

I was surprised the Sony and Panny talk to each other, maybe other brands too.

Note you may need to enable HDMI control in both the Panny and your Pio.

I don't know. Never saw it and never really looked. It's certainly never done anything like that automatically. I'll have to check later.

The only thing deader than the analog TVGOS feature is triple-combo DVD/VHS/HDD recorders. Nothing offered today has the same functionality as your DMR-E75, and even when it was new *only* Panasonic had a TVGOS system that actually worked and made things easier, instead of getting in the way. Prices for used or new-old-stock Panasonics with TVGOS remain very high for these reasons. If you really love the TVGOS, and you're pretty sure it will work with your cable TV after Feb 17th, $130 for the repair is a much better value than buying another recorder. It is extremely unlikely we will ever again see anything comparable to the Panasonic DMR-E75 in USA stores, and if we did it would sell for $500+. Get your machine repaired and enjoy it: the Elk Grove facility does a really good job, you get what amounts to a total overhaul instead of the patchwork provided by local service centers. The $130 is well-spent if it gives you another two years use.
