Panny phd8uk aspect ratio question

Hey all -- have a phd8uk which has been amazing so far with standard Def material -- I like the Just mode a lot for the 4:3 screens, and have been looking forward to today for a while -- when we switch to the HD cable box.

SD was running through S-video, and all aspect ratio options were available. I also had a Gamecube set up through the component cables, where I could adjust the aspect ratios as well. When they came to hook it up today, they said I would have to go get my own HDMI cord (fine, grumble grumble) but they would give me component cords in the meantime. I have the HDMI blade installed and ready to go.

Question is that now that the cable is hooked up through the component cables, I can no longer switch between aspect ratios in the component cable input. All the others still allow it, but not the cable, even when it is not on a HD channel.

Two questions: Why won't it let me switch? Will the HDMI cable allow me to switch SD TV to Just mode?

It is becuase your cable box is outputing a HD signal, and like the vast majorty displays, your Panny locks to full mode as that is the proper aspect ratio setting for HD content. You'll get the same results with HDMI as well. Hopefully you can set your cable box to pass though the 480i signals for standard cable though, which will alow you to adjust the aspect ratio however you like for such channels.
So that's a setting I can (hopefully) adjust somehow in the cable output?
Yeah, in the cable box's configuration menu there is most likely a setting to let you output 480i channels as 480i or 480p. If so, choose whichever looks best to you as either will alow you to use the aspect ratio options of your display.
