Per Panasonic, the TH-50XVS30UP only supports 720p via PC input:

am I better off with the TH-50PHD7UY?

If you need 720p direct input for XBOX games, yes.
What about ESPN-HD, isn't that broadcast in 720p?
The TH-50XVS30UP is the high end (i.e. overpriced) Onyx model that is available only at specialty stores, and will list at about $10,000. You can get the 7UY for half that.

There is supposed to be a 7UY equivalent consumer model out soon that will replace the X25U, but not sure of the numbering or price, or how it differs from the Onyx line.

That depends. If you are using a cable-card (read- a coax input) then that isn't a problem. Likewise, if your cable/satellite box has an internal scaler such that it can output everything at 1080i, then again not an issue (although there is a double-scaling going on) . As was mentioned before, you'd only have a problem with 720p inputs from console games (although you could still get a VGA transcoder).
Thanks. Based upon what I've read in these Forums and what I can afford... I'm leaning very heavily towards purchasing a Panasonic TH-50PHD7UY FP. I'm forced to use TW cable, and have their Explorer 8300HD DVR. I also have an Onkyo HT-S760. If I do purchase the 7UY would you recommend I get the DVI or HDMI optional terminal? The DVR has an HDMI interface (I think its active) and I'm under the impression there are optional speakers for the 7UY. The DVR supports 480i/480p/720p/1080i with a Pass-Through option. Does this mean the 7UY will be able to handle all these scan rates natively?
HDMI can pass video and audio, which could save you some cables, depending on how you handle your audio. HDMI is also compliant with HDCP, which means you don't have to worry about having HD signals down-rezzed. I believe there are adaptors for both.
720p HD channels aren't a problem - the internal cablecard tuner supports 720p and external OTA, satellite, or cable HD STBs can convert 720p channels to 1080i format. The lack of direct 720p input on component/DVI is only an issue with the few 720p XBOX HD games and even those could be run in 480p if needed.

Unless you are a chronic upgrader, the next gen consoles will be out in a year or two as well, and they should pretty much all be in at least 720p. Something to think about for the gaming minded out there. Not sure how HD-DVD is going to work out- probably have to be output at lower res since I don't think the panels can even take a 1080p signal- who knows, maybe the players will interlace the fields or something. Blatant speculation on my part anyway.

Yes, you should be fine with a 7UY regardless. They do sell optional speakers, although I'm not sure why you'd want to bother with them if you already have a discrete audio solution. DVI is probably a good idea at the very least for the HDCP issue (might be marginally better PQ too). You could go HDMI as well, but the card isn't out for another couple of months (estimated, panny hasn't released it yet in any event so you can't get one now). And since you haven't mentioned any sort of video receiver you might need a DVI/HDMI switch. Not sure what you are using for DVDs. Bear in mind that if you go with both digital terminals on the 7uy (at some point) you'll loose the component and s-vid terminals (from what I understand).
