paradigm or mirage?

840 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  miragefan
I had a sweet system, studio 60,studio 20,studio cc and servo 15.These were all v2 and run with a denon 4802r.I have two kids and was just not able to use it.I had sold it over a year ago and regret it every day.I'm now going to build a room in the basement just for HT.I just bought a full irage setup without even hearing it.I bought omni 260,omni cc and 2 sets of fx.They will be in in a week or so.I was just wondering how these would hold up compaired to the paradigm? Thanks

anybody have any input?I have read good reviews on the omni series but also hear they suck.I'm nervous because I have never heard the omni series before. Please let me know what you think?

Thanks
depends if you like omnipolar versus traditional speaker sound. I really liked the mirage sound and they make a great product.

kw..............
Not sure on the omnipolar sound,I never heard them.I loved the paradigm reference.I should have listened to a set of mirage before I bought them.

And chose your screen name.
I guess your right on the screen name.I'm now a mirage owner,I can't be paradigmfan.
Think of it as an adventure, or better yet, opening gifts on your birthday. Hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I have never seen an accurate FR measurement for Mirage. I have seen accurate measurements for Paradigm. I say go with Paradigm for an accurate sound and Mirage for a warm, recessed midrange sound.

Did you buy these used? I haven't seen any of the 260's anywhere for quite some time. I think Mirage are more "love 'em or hate 'em" type thing, as some people don't like the non-discreetness of the speakers. I happen to really like mine, but I've only been piping movies through them & they work like a charm.
I have heard the omni series before, and did not like them at all...Paradigm on the other hand though, now thats a different story. I think the studio series all sound excellent.
I've owned Mirage for some time now and I've listened to the Paradigm Reference series on several occasions. I have owned the OM-9, OM-C2 and OM-R2 speakers and the Omni 60's. The OM-9's did have a recessed presentationin terms of imaging and were rather laid back on the top end. The Omni 60's, and by extension the 260's, are more forward and are not as laid back in the midrange or treble.

Having said all of that, Paradigm Reference and Mirage really sound nothing alike. Paradigm's sound like a really good set of conventional speakers, with all that that entails. I found the sound that they produced to be quite good for two channel, with razor sharp imaging and a decent soundstage. I didn't really care for them for home theater, I found all the speakers but the dipole surrounds to be too easily located by my ear instead of blending into a cohesive sound field.

Mirage, on the other hand, are almost impossible to locate by ear alone and have a sense of space that is really unique to this type of speaker. I have found that by playing with the amount of toe-in with the speakers you can actually get fairly decent imaging out of the speakers, although it will never be razor sharp as with conventional speakers, it will at least sound natural and instruments and singers will have their place in the sound field.

But I am speaking from the standpoint of someone who loves omnipolar sound. You may not care for it at all. If you do like it then almost nothing else will do. I am anxiously waiting for Mirage's new stuff to come out later this year (and for them to update their website!).

I own Paradigm Studio 100's and 20's and I have heard the Mirage Omni's...

I also did not like the Omni's, I know alot of people do but I have never been a fan of the bi-directional sound, to me it sounds like big PA speakers with sound going everywhere....Hope it works out for you.
I hope I made the right choice here.I heard a buddys frx speakers and liked them, that's why I went with mirage.I'm starting to thing they might sound like a dsp mode on your receiver(hall, stadium).I hope not,I can't stand that sound.
