Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a pair of main speakers. I have narrowed it down to these speakers. PSB Model IMAGE4T 150W 60hm Towers or Paradigm Model Monitor9 150w 80hm Towers? I want the best speakers that will give me good audio sound and DVD movie reproduction sound. My budget is 700 dollars. Please let me know if these are good selections for my needs. Thanks

Both speakers are great to my ear. I selected the Paradigm Monitor 7s primarlily beacuase I got a better deal than on the comparable PSBs I was considering.

Consider the Image 5t. Can be had for about $500 a pair. Definitely give them a listen. The paradigm is not as smooth (IMHO) in the mids. I auditioned many speakers the last two months and went with the PSB stratus silver i (a little more money). I just received them today. Try Bill at YAWAonline. Great service. PM me if you want a list of the speakers I auditioned and why I chose the PSB.

Yeah, 5T or 6T is good too. The 5T and 6T are both more efficient AND have more bass than the 4T.

4T=89 dB and 38 hz -3dB

5T=90 dB and 35 hz -3dB

6T=91 dB and 32 hz -3dB

Not huge differences, but I think you'd notice the difference between the speakers. Also, consider that you might be inclined to match the 5 or 6T's with the 9C center and 2B surrounds but it is not essential. You can get away with the 8C center and 1B surrounds :)

All three are nice speakers. I have the 6T cause I listen to music without my subwoofer sometimes :)

I also bought the PSB Silver i's from Bill at Yawa and I'm very pleased with the speakers. Mine are piano finish blems at over 50% off MSP and well... if there's a blem, damned if I can find it. I figured with that glossy black finish any flaw would stand out clearly, but happily they look and sound perfect.

Maybe I got lucky or maybe the guy with the "blem stamp" got bored and went nuts. :D

Did you compare the Silver's with the paradigm reference series? I have a set of 5Ts right now but I'm thinking of moving them to the rears and getting silver's but the hight end paradigns are nice too!

Kind of a different topics, but I notice everyone seems to be using 2B's for rears. Anyone compare the 2B's to the 10s's in the same room? Any comments, thoughts, or preference of dipoles v. direct radiators in the image line??

The 10S isn't a dipole its a bipole. PSB does make dipole surrounds though:

It isn't a full dipole, but rather a dipole at high frequencies and a bipole at lower frequencies. Kinda weird.

I'd use the 10S's but they stretched my budget as it was. 2B's are fine for me. 10S's do sound more spacious without losing the directionality.

Paradigm tends to load the bass at about 100hz. I auditioned the ref 60's and I liked them alot. But at $1200 for the vinyl clad vs. $999 for the piano gloss black psb's which are by far a better looking speaker (IMHO) and being front ported which allows me to move them closer to the (a necessity) the choice was easy. But at the $500 mark paradigm has nothing to compete with the psb image 5t floor stander. I do believe you could be happy with the ref 60's or silver i's but at the lower price point take the 5t's, they have much better bass then the ref 40 and blow away anything paradigm has below that price point. Give them a listen. You will be glad you did.

Is this a bad thing? I know for mixing live music, 100hz is one of the most desireable frequencies in the lower range....

Bad thing? depends on if you like it. It sells their speakers though. Makes them sound more 'full'. As you mention 'desirable frequency' I guess thats why they picked that range. I much prefer that to bright highs though. Thats why sound is subjective to the listener. My co-worker has older Klipsch Cornwalls? (I think) and they are very well respected, WAY to bright and harsh for me. As I stated, in the price range of the Ref 60's I would choose the Blem Silver I's for less money. (can find no marks though). But if I had to pay full price I would take the 60's in a heart beat.

I auditioned Paradigm Ref series and PSB Stratus speakers a year ago.. The Paradigm's, to my ears were harsher sounding at the top. I ended up buying a pair of PSB Stratus Silveri 's, C6i center and a pair of Image 10S's for the rears all powered by a Denon 5803... Damn i love the sound of these speakers! :)

It doesn't matter what i throw at them IE: music or movies... it all sounds incredible too me. :cool:

I have the 6T's, 9C, and 2B's and they absolutely rock for HT!! Music is great. My friend bought the 5T's, and the 6T's seem to have a bigger, more room filling sound and they do go lower. You really don't even need a sub if you run them on large setting. I also auditioned the Paradigms and thought they sounded a bit harsh, to my ears anyway.

I just received my Magnepan 1.6's last night and WOW!!! But, now I have to sell my whole PSB setup, I don't want too. Wife says they must go......oh well.

What price range are the ref 60' selling at? I know a set of silver i's can be have for around the $1200 mark. I have a set of 5t's that I paid about 500 bucks for, so I though that was a great deal.

And speaking of 5t's does anyone use floor standing speakers for their rears? If I replace the 5t's I was thinking of moving them to be the rears. Any thoughts?

WXdude,

You're selling your PSB's! Wow. You have the exact same setup as I do. We've probably chatted or typed about this elsewhere. Anyways, you say you really don't need a sub if you run the 6T's on LARGE setting? Hmm, I have to admit I have never tried watching a movie with the 6T's LARGE and NO SUB, but I don't quite think they have the bottom end for ground shaking effects that most subs have. My Mirage BPS-400 is hugely different in terms of bass performance when compared to my 6T's. The 6T's go low, but they rattle the walls like the Mirage do. Still, I agree, the 6T's do play low and sound good for that respect, I just don't think they are monsterously powerful down there, at least not in my experience. But I guess you mean to say that someone with 6T's doesn't NEED a subwoofer nearly as bad as someone with smaller speakers. I agree with that for sure.

What amp/receiver are you using with your PBS's ? :cool:
