Paradigm pw 2200 or SVS PC Ultra sub?

2429 Views 56 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Quill
Hello, I'm new to the forum and I have a few questions regarding these two subs. I'm currently deployed right now, but I have been thinking about getting one of these two subs upon my return to the states. I currently have Paradigm Monitor 7's, cc - 370, adp 370's and I will also be using a Denon 3805 to run the system.

I probably will be moving into an apartment at first, so the room will be small. I listen to 50% movies and 50% music. I also like very tight bass. My question's are;

1) Which one would any of you recommend me getting?

2) and why?

Thank you very much for your help.

Sincerely,

Chad

The SVS will out perform the Paradigm...any day of the week. No doubt there.
I recently purchased the SVS PC Ultra sub. I have infinity Intermezzos all round and also with a Denon 3805. I pieced together my parents HT a couple years ago and got them a Velodyne HGS 15. Although the Velo is a very good sub the SVS hits 25Hz and lower with more authority and it's easier to place. To be frank this sub Kicks some serious aas.
SVS all the way, but I am biased since I own a PC-Ultra :).
in an apartment, you're gonna have to turn that SVS waaaaayyy down
SVS all the way baby...

The Paradigm won't go as low or play as loud.

How do you know this? Just making the statemant as you did sure makes you loose credibility.

Because I've heard them both in my house. Hopefully that improves my credibility. Well, I actually heard the PC plus which plays louder and lower than the 2200. I think the Ultra goes louder still ergo it'll play louder and lower. You see unlike some guys, I post only when I've heard something IN MY HOME.
Unless you are in canada, SVS is still the way to go. Paradigm makes excellent subs though, the 2200 is no slouch.
I'll second that Chris. I have a PW-2200 and couldn't be happier. I'm sure SVS makes EXCELLENT subs, they should, that's all they do and they're online only - if they didn't they'd have been history long ago.

What gets my dander up with SVS owners is how their attitudes are - SVS "Blows this away" - the PW-2200 has a 400 watt amp that can go to 1500 watts in short spurts - thats pretty friggin loud in my house, shakes windows 3 floors up and in my neighbors house and in my estimation way too much for an apartment, as the PC-Ultra would be.

Chad - it really doesn't matter for your apartment - either sub will be more than enough - get the cheapest one!
Kpt:

No need to get your dander up. The fact is that the 2200 will not plumb the depths the way a PC-Ultra will nor will it play as loud. Also, here in the US the Paradigms are way overpriced (compared to Canada) and the SVS a huge bargain (compared or not to Canada). So the choice is clear: SVS here in the US. If one lives in Canada, the decision is certainly more difficult. But I think the Refererence sub (the big 15") is more competition for the SVS's performance wise.
How would you compare that to SVS? How does a, I'm assuming, tuned sub with RABOS compare to the SVS.

Mike
I have Intermezzo Speakers all around with an SVS PC Ultra Sub. I actually used the RABOS disc for my sub bacause the SVS has a parametric EQ same as the Mezzos. I have never heard the Mezzo sub though accept for the 12's in my parents 4.1t's. Which don't hit anything like the SVS.

This is short sighted though. If he is living in an apartment now yes he will have to turn it down but what happens when he gets a house? Will he have to upgrade the sub? In the case of the PC Ultra I'm confident the answer would be NO.

SO yes he will have to turn it down now but if he moves into a house, he is already to go as far as the sub goes.
just for the record..im not talking out of my butt when it comes to direct comparisons between SVS and Paradigm. I have listened to just about every Paradigm sub compared to my SVS...and the only one that performed as well was the Servo-15...at a MUCH higher cost.

Thus the reason I think SVS is the better choice over Paradigm.
I am surprised that no one has mentioned the cost difference between the two! The PC Ultra is $1150 and I got my PW2200 three or so years ago for $650. One 2200 rocks the house! Two subs would be awesome! Two subs also help with room nodes. But since you just have an appartment, I think both of those would be overkill since you could never listen to them at volume.
I want to thank everyone for your responses! I'm leaning more toward the SVS PC Ultra because of all the great reviews I've been reading regarding this product. Although, I like the looks of the Paradigm a lot better then the SVS, and the PW 2200 would match the rest of my speakers, which is why I have been so unsure. Yes, I will be getting a house in the near future, so good clean, loud and low frequencies in a larger room is a must for me, which is why I haven't out ruled the possibility of a second sub in the future. It's hard to compare when you haven't heard either of the two sub's.

I also considered the Servo-15, but I heard it may be hard to set up in some rooms? Any comments? And the SVS PB2 plus would be way too big. I think it would scare my Wife, so this sub would be out of the question until I get a house.

Well, the servo 15 is a GREAT sub, but the reason I bought the SVS PCi was because I heard how great good bass could be. I was just going to get a mediocre sub, but I think I've equalled at least the quality of the Servo 15 with a PCi 20-39, for far far less cash. I can only imagine what a PC+ or PC ultra is like :D.
Well, I have a 20-39 PC+ and it beats the servo-15 for sure. Not saying the Paradigm is a bad sub..its actually VERY good...but for my money....no way...the SVS is a much better performer at a MUCH better value.

To each his own though!

Chad,

I own both the PW-2200 and the Servo-15. I haven't heard the SVS's and so I can't comment on comparisons between the SVS and Paradigm. I think that the raw acoustic output between the 2200 and Servo are about the same. The practical low end extensions sound similar too - but since the Servo is sealed while the 2200 is ported, the low end roll-off of the Servo is more gradual. Therefore, the Servo actually does produce lower frequencies than the 2200.

But from a "quality" of bass point of view, the Servo does much better than the 2200. It's hard to pin point what it is. It may be the much lower distortion that is a result of the sero (ie feedback) mechanism. Or it might be the sealed vs ported design.

BTW, this is not to say that the 2200 is bad. It's more like: the 2200 is very good, but the Servo is exquisite!

Oh - forgot to respond to the difficult to set up comment: I can't see why it's any more or less difficult than any other sub. I've had no problem.
