I own Paradigm monitor 11 and love them, but I kept hearing about the Studios and how sweet they sound. So I wanted to see what all the buzz was about and headed down to my local audio retailer to check them out. This was about 2 months ago, I wasn't ready to purchase, just wanted to hear them. So decided to listen to the Studio 60's because they were more my price range but wanted to compare them to something else in the same price range, which was the Monitor Audio. The store sells both brands and told the saleman this is what I want to listen to, so he hooked them up, first the Monitor Audio, then the Paradigm Studios, we played the same songs on both speakers and although I liked the Monitor Audio, the Studios blew them away, the difference was immediately noticeable. I really just prefer the Paradigm sound better. We did not purchase anything that day, but did go back about a month ago, I had gotten a nice bonus from work and they just happen to have a sale in store, so we did purchase the Studio 100's v5. So obviously my choice would be the Studios, this is not a put down for Monitor Audio as they make great products and its really up to you which sound you prefer, but I am extremely happy with my studios and appreciate the great sound every day. But in the end, its a choice, listen to both and make your choice, only you know what sound you prefer. Happy hunting!

I left a comment earlier and I just wanted to re-phrase something that I said. I was off to work and in a rush when I posted it, sorry.

I said earlier that the Studios blew the Monitor Audio away, what I really meant was that I really liked the Studios immediately over the Monitor Audio. Just wanted to clarify that because I do not want to ruffle any feathers as I believe that Monitor Audio does make excellent products. I am not one of these people who think that whatever brand I own is the only speaker for people, we all have our own taste and preferences. For me it was the Studios. And honestly competition is good, it makes the reputable manufacturers continue to strive to make their products better. On that note, I hope you all have a good night.

I prefer the 60's and RX6 to both, and Monitor Audio over Paradigm, both are great.

Ron

can you explain what it is about the 60's you like better than the 100's.

and what makes you prefer MA or paradigm?

I don't know what your pricing is like in NZ but here in Canada the P100's cost about the same as MA GS20's which are better than the RX8's.

Still....you really need to listen to the speakers in your home to come to a final decision. Both speakers are great so you can't lose either way.

I find the smaller towers easier to position and really like the RX6's imaging and soundstage. To me the MA's seemed more versatile with the material I liked, but this is pretty subjective so of course you should listen for yourself.

thanks all around for the input. I am demoing the rx8 vs s100's. here in nz the 100s are more expensive as well, but the salesman here was trying to claim the rx8 sounded as good (they don't sell paradigm of course). but he's been nice enough to get a pair of 100's in so I can do a side by side in two weeks or so.

totally unrelated, but any suggestions for good demo songs?

I'm going with:

1812 overture (dynamic range), hotel california (guitars, imaging), toccata in fugue (low end), florence and the machine (female vocals), NIN (speed, detail).

not sure about male vocals yet. maybe tom waits.

suggestions?

I found this thread had some good recommendations. The Rodrigo y Gabriela 11:11 was my favorite. I use Sade Greatest Hits cd because I've gotten very familiar with it. It has a good sound stage and I love the way the instruments sound. Its funny because I never listened to her before I got my studio 20s.

There are some more threads like that in the 2 channel audio section.

Please let us know what you find. I'm in the same situation although I'm not too concerned about 2ch stereo as this would mainly be for HT. I auditioned the S100's and the CC-690 yesterday and was blown away. For music, I found the S100's very full, maybe a tad laid back in the highs that I'm used to (coming from Infinity speakers). I'll be auditioning the RX8's on Monday, however the dealer only has those and not the full surround. I really want to know if it's going to be worth the extra $1000 or so for the Paradigms. If it weren't for the CC-690 being such an awesome beast of a center, I think my choice would be a little bit easier.

I'm demoing the s100 and rx8's this weekend and will report my findings!

I demo'd the rx8's vs the 100's. I ended up going with the 100's at the time but have since got a set of RX6's for my living room. I liked the 6's better than the 8's. The 6's imaged soooooooooo nice and I felt they did a better job than the 8's did.

I have since moved on to JTR speakers in my HT and couldn't be happier.

So to me, I'd go with the 100's over the 8's.

Thanks for the input N8DGG. Even though this will be 80-90% HT use, I'll still care about the sound quality/characteristics for the music portion and would probably have to adjust to the warmer sound, IMO, Paradigm brings. Plus forking out the extra cash for the piano black finish.

I wish my dealer had the 6's. We'll see how the 8's do on Monday.

Well I auditioned the RX8's today and I definitely preferred them over the Paradigms. They were more of the sound I was looking for. They were a lot shorter and slimmer width wise than I thought they would be, but the sound and bass extension that was put out from such a small footprint was amazing to me. I liked them so much that I'm actually considering just saving up and going for the new GX series that's supposed to be announced at CES. There's pics up at the MA owner's thread on about the 2nd to the last page of the rumored GX300. Go big or go home, right?
