I am a complete newbie but trying to do the best I can for a reasonable budget. I am re-doing my basement into a family room set up as 1/2 HT and 1/2 game room. Will use a section approximately 16x10 as the HT with an opening towards the front of the room (around 6') leading to the other section(13x15) where I have a bar and will put in a foosball table, etc. I plan on putting a 5.1 in the HT area and putting 2 in-ceiling speakers over the game room area and get a zoned receiver so I can have music everywhere. I will use the area 80/20 HT now but as my children get older and have friends over, I may end up using music more. I picked up the first piece of the puzzle last week when I purchased the EVO 40 system on AudioAdvisor. I would love advice on a sub in the $500 region. I have never had one, so don't really know what to expect. Would like it to fill both the HT area and the game area when listening to music. I am considering the Mirage S12 as well as the UFW-10, PBS-12 and the small unit from Hsu. Would those fill both areas for music? Would that be too much in my relatively small HT area? As I said, I've never owned one and don't really know what to expect in my room. Thanks to anyone willing to offer advice.
Since you are remodeling the area you should consider inifinite baffle (IB) designs. This will surpass the commercial offerings in your budget range. 2 15" Adire Tempests + amp would do it...
Keep in mind I am a newbie and wouldn't even know where to look for that. Plus, would be clueless as to an amp with that. I am only a doctor, not nearly intelligent enough to put together the kind of systems I read about on this site!! (I am not being facetious, either. When I read some of these posts, my head goes numb). Thanks for the info and where can I look that up?
