Alright, I'm in the market for an audio system. I have around $800 to spend. I would like to put together a basic audio system for parties and music, not so much home theater. I;m thinkin two front towers and maybe a center channel, with a basic receiver and a kickass sub (bass bass bass!). What brands should I look at? Do I need to spend more than 800 for what I want? Thanks for all your help!

I have HT knowledge, but not so much in the area of just loud music and a lot of bass for a decent price. I understand speaker specs and receiver information and such so use any terms you like.

If you have no plans for movies, you can just get a two channel stereo receiver.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...X0DER&v=glance

This receiver has subwoofer outputs, A&B speaker terminals so you can run 4 speakers at a time.

PA-120 subwoofer. $229

And get 4 Jamo small tower speakers for $70each.

Subwoofer $229

4 Jamo E660 $276

Harman Kardon 3390 receiver, $219.

Well under your $800 limit and would be very loud in a 150 sq ft room.

without a discount you could get 4 A6-5t5 speakers and a A3-250 sub but you could prolly work out some discount and depending on if you want to do a 2.1 or 3.1 might be able to squeeze in towers and a decent sub from eD

Why would he need 4 speakers with a stereo receiver?

Sounds like you would enjoy something like this CERWIN-VEGA CLS-10

Yeah, for party speakers, I would go for a pair of Cerwin-Vega and an eD sub. You might not even need a sub...

You could try looking up some micro hi-fi systems and get on with the DVD/CD player with mp3/wma compatibility, or you can get one with 3.5mm input or USB input. On some you will need to look at a subwoofer as well.

You can try those plastic Sony's with 2*100W two-way or whatever + 150W subwoofer, which would be loud and hopefully bassy, and probably have all the features, but may be lacking in quality.

I have a Kenwood AX-7, which fills the music side of things, and has excellent sound, but would need a sub-woofer for party use and may be lacking in power with 50W two-way speakers or 25W when using the 4-channel option. The price may be getting towards your limit once you have the sub, i.e. $500 - $750 for AX-7 + whatever for the subwoofer.

I'm not an "expert" on general knowledge when it comes to the various systems, and mine is relatively unknown, so, take it or leave it...

If your running more than two speakers consider running a mono sound setup (all speakers get the exact same signal) for parties and then switch back to stereo for 2 channel music listening.

I'd second those cerwin vegas. At $176 each you could pick up four of them and still have change for an amp and cd player. Maybe consider used gear for the amps+cd player if you want a bit of quality and 4 speakers. Drop down to two of the CVs listed above and you'll have plenty of money left to get a nice amp + cd player (new).
