I would like Dolby Digital on my Yamaha receiver while playing DVD's

I'm at a loss trying to get Dolby Digital into my Yamaha 5.1 receiver running Definitive Technology speakers (BP10B). I purchased Entertainer 7.1 DSP, but it doesn't do true Dolby Digital and the receiver only recognizes the feed as Dolby Pro Logic.

Then I purchased an Audigy2 NX (external usb) and hooked the optical out port to my receiver. No go. It too could not receive a Dolby Digital signal. The software from Creative makes it look like it only allows digital out with a 2 speaker setup.

Is there any soundcard that can get me Dolby Digital on my Yamaha receiver?

Umm, I'd be surprised either of them can't. Make sure the settings are right in whatever you're playing them in and select the correct audio track. i.e. Dolby Digital

Failing that, an M-Audio Revolution has no problems with general DVD audio passthrough over the S/PDIF

I called Mad Dog Entertainment support and they told me their card can't pass Dolby Digital to a home receiver. They did say the Audigy would be able to do this, but I've had no luck. If I choose "Only Optical Out", I can only choose a two speaker setup.

I use the Live 5.1 and went through the same woes that you are over this pass weekend, make sure you are using a mono to mono 3.5 out of Soundblaster to your digital coaxial in on your reciever.

Set your mixer on Soundblaster to 5.1, if you hit test speakers it will only feed the front left and front right because it is not feeding a digital track to test all speakers, click settings and make sure there is not a check in AC3 redirect box.

If you have more than one Drive in your computer, make sure you have the wire from the back of your dvd to the spdif in on your soundcard( This was my flaw)

Set up PowerDVD or whatever you are using to output to Spdif and you will be good to go, pop in a dvd and your reciever will automatically switch to Dolby Digital.

Your Audigy is basically the same card as mine so it will work

Hope this helps

You need to use the Audigy in SPDIF pass through mode. That way, your DVD software (or HDTV receiver card) passes through the DD encoded stream to the card which passes it to the receiver without any surround processing.

The 2 speaker setup for digial output is normal. The Audigy card is not capable of DD encoding. So, PC audio can only be passed in stereo via the digital output. But, this does not stop pre-encoded DD audio from being passed via SPDIF for full 5.1 audio. Just make sure your DVD/HDTV app is set for SPDIF output.

If you want to do 5.1 PC audio (e.g. for games) with the Audigy, you need to hook up the six analog outputs to the six channel input of your receiver. That way, it's passing 6 analog outputs, not needing DD encoding.
