Passing 4K Content from an external hard drive to projector

483 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  cjc1922
I'm hoping someone can help me - I have a hard drive with 4K MKV files that I am trying to pass through to my 4K projector. I need to know what is the easiest and/or most inexpensive way to pass-thru this content to my BenQ 4K projector. Would an Amazon TV 4K allow me to attach an external hard drive and pass-thru the 4K content? Please advise, thank you.

I don't know about the cheapest but a popular way is to ....

Have the files on a PLEX server - This could mean hooking the Hard drive to a computer or laptop and DL-ing the free plex server application

View the files from a 4K capable streamer. - Here there's lots of choices. I only know about my own configuration which uses INFUSE on ATV4K but there is also a ATV4K Plex app and many of the other streaming devices have native Plex apps.

Thank you for this idea. I'm not too tech savvy, so does this mean that the laptop would need to be connected to the receiver via HDMI for this 4K to pass thru? Sorry to ask, but I will look at this option, but need a little more direction.
If you are can connect your computer to the system via HDMI it can be much simpler...

Download the free program called VLC

https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It's legit -- Doesn't give you virus or Mal ware or that type of stuff. Even though it's free it really is worth while. Runs on any type of computer also.

(The people who always say you get what you pay for annoy me personally... I've been ripped off or got good deals... You don't always pay the right amount for everything you buy in my opinion.)

Play the files... the end.

(A lot of video players are carriers of malware so if you want to substitute another player maybe ask here or something)

Thank you very much for the help. i'll try that tonight and let you know how it works out!
Still having issues...

Brian, sorry it took so long to give you a shout back, but here goes... First thank you for the great suggestions! I have been using Plex, and for regular HD movies streaming from my PC to other devices (including my projector set-up) it has worked nicely. However, for the 4K content, it sometimes will freeze/buffer. I have the Netgear Nighthawk R8000 router, that has two separate 5GH channels, so I cannot seem to figure out how to watch a 4K streaming from my computer without the jutter/buffering. If you have any other suggestions, I will give them a try. Again, thank you for the help!
