pc to HDTV with HDMI a problem?

Sorry is this is redundant but I'm not sure this has been covered exactly. I've got a Toshiba 32HL86 LCD I have connected to my pc through the VGA port currently. However, I can't get any resolutions to display properly besides those that are 4:3. It's irritating to play pc games stretched out when they only support widescreen by way of a different resolution rather than a widescreen mode for a 4:3 resolution. 1280x720 even has a strong pink hue. I want to give the HDMI port a try but my manual states "do not connect a pc using the HDMI port. The HDMI port is not designed to support input from a pc. Only tv's with a VGA port are suitable for connection to a pc."

Now I've seen people posting about using HDMI for a pc connection so I know that last part is bunk. My main question is could attempting such a thing in some way damage the tv? Or is it simply not likely to work? Those things are pricey so I want to be fairly certain. If anyone has any thoughts on the probtem with the VGA resolutions, they would be welcome as well.

Thanks all.

I'm wondering the same thing. Does anyone have any experience or know anything about this?

you are right - lots of sets support pc to hdmi. your toshiba does not however. you will not hurt your set but it will not work w/ pc to hdmi.

what is the maximum supported resolution for vga for your set?

Thanks all.
I haven’t set up a TV via HDMI-DVI yet so I can’t speak to that. What I can tell you is that you can try several different resolution adjustment tools to try and force your Toshiba to accept a widescreen format via VGA. Google SwitchresX (Mac) or Power Strip (PC); both of those utilities can be used to force a display to accept a different resolution. Just keep it within your panel’s native specs. Sometimes these utilities work and sometimes they don’t; it seems to depend primarily on the TV. I know it works on the Sony 32-inch S series LCD, but I can’t vouch for your model. Still it is free to try before you buy an adapter to run via HDMI.

I've tried using powerstrip with little luck. All the resolutions not at a 4:3 ratio have a red/pink hue to it. Has anyone else found a solution to this?

Much Thanks.
