I unfortunately only have a pci card available on my computer and need a better graphics card. The integrated graphics are NVIDIA GeForce 6150LE with HDMI out. But this isnt cutting it for HD video (usually 720p is all right if nothing else is going on on the machine but 1080p is very juttery), I have a dual core 2.2 GHZ processor with 4 gb of ram. I perfer to play my videos through MKVs but lately it will not do it for the hd so i use the new divx player. I can do DVI- HDMI adapter since audio is seperate 5.1 output

Any suggestions would be GREAT!

btw i have the coreavc codec!

Heres everything newegg has to offer. They have some 84000's and also 9500. Either of those would be fine normally. I'm not sure what kind of limitations pci gives you. It looks like you will need that hdmi>dvi adapter. Dont see any with hdmi out.

I've Looked through most of Newegg's and read most of the reviews. Some of them are stupid and the ones which seem helpful apply more to gaming and becasue i am not a gamer, i do not know what kind of requirements certain games need etc... The reason i am asking here is for htpc type applicatons......

What is your budget?

The HD2400 from the ATI stables are the way to go if you want HD decoding for older PCs. However, they would run you at least $50 or more.

Here's what 1 reviewer wrote about the HD2400 card:

==========================================

It can do BlueRay and HD Video

Pros: It can do HD and Blueray just not with Cyberlink, it works just fine with hardware accelration with WinDVD and ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre

Cons: Does not support hardware accelaration with Cyberlink

Other Thoughts: Best PCI HDTV card available

===========================================

At this price point you would be better off just upgrading your motherboard. Since you have a 6150, I assume you have Socket AM2 CPU. Get a board with 780G/8200/8300 and you will be set. These boards start at $50 and up.

BTW: DVI and HDMI are the same for video, no difference whatsoever. So you can use a DVI-HDMI adapter and get the same HD video quality.

Its actually not an old PC, it is an MSI Media Live http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16856167020

I Love the form factor and the rest of the system works well, especially the multichannel 7.1 output. I dont mind spending the money and will look into that card. Thanks!

Jnskid,

Do I understand correctly that you only have one standard PCI-slot available and no PCI-E slots available?

I checked on some HD2400 cards but the ones I found all required a PCI-E slot.

Certainly a 6150 card does not have the power to handle much HD content.

Correct! Only one PCI slot, but there are HD2400 pci cards but as i posted, they are not getting great reviews

I can see why; it looks great.

If you have a Best Buy or Walmart or any other B&M nearby which carries this card, you can buy it to check it out. If its too much money then you can return it and get it from Newegg. Also, check ebay for this card, you never know where you might come across a cheap deal.

I use 2 of these cards (AGP not PCI) in 2 different systems. One is custom-build MSI board with a VIA chipset and the other is a Dell Dimension PC. Works great and has enabled HD video for me on single-core P4 systems (both of them).

With HD decoding, remember that the software you use has to be able to take advantage of the available hardware which is what happened with a lot of people (as mentioned in the review).

What operating system do you have?

oooh....XP!

Technically XP doesn't support DirectX10 which is required for hardware acceleration. People have managed to get it working apparently, but I never could.

You might want to do some researching and reading.

And the card I referred to was the HD2400.

For hardware DXVA to work, everything has to be supporting it; i.e. the OS, graphics chip and the software. With the right PCI card you might have 2 pieces and the OS might not support it.

But as I said, people play back HD videos on XP machines. Maybe someone with XP can provide input.

Most all the cards would be great in a normal bus type. I've read reviews that you are limited by the pci bus with these cards but I'm not sure how much.

I looked into this a while back and ended up deciding to scrap the idea.

But imo your best bet is to find one in a brick and mortar where you can do an easy return. Then pop it in and figure out how well it will do. If its a no go take it back and go with plan b.

You might cross post this in the following link to another forum thread here on AVS. It's all about your motherboard.

Ask in that thread about what cards work best with that motherboard, or they might be able to figure out why you are having problems with your video. Most people that use that motherboard just for HTPC use have no problems with HD video content. (Not speaking from first hand knowledge I don't have one YET! )

Note: That thread is about the MSI Media Live Diva, which is very different motherboard than is used in the MSI Media Live. Similar name, both are designed for HTPC's, but very different products.
