PDZ Save game question

I have just started to play perfect dark zero and was wondering how saving works. I am on the mission 1 where you have to listen to the enforcers. I have listened to the first one and thought there would be a checkpoint or something, but didn't receive one.

Do I have to complete the mission in one sitting?

Pretty much. Each mission I've played so far (I think I'm on four) has had a checkpoint at some point during the overall mission where, if you die, you can restart from rather than going back to the beginning of the mission. I've tried to finish a mission before stopping the game, but on Tuesday night, I couldn't beat Mai Lei (sp? pronounced melee) and gave up to go to bed. I'm not sure if I'll get to pick it up in the DeathMatch chamber, which is where the checkpoint is, or if I have to start the mansion mission from the beginning again.

EDIT: The chick's name is Mai Hem, not Mai Lei. So it sounds like he's saying mayhem. She's not bad, but those damned stone statues kill me everytime.
yea, the checkpoints are WAY to far apart imho....COD2 had it just right
So you cant access the hard drive for games saved there? If I saved my progress to the h/d (I have), why cant one just load it from there? (like a pc quicksave)?
It looks like you have to play the missions comlpetely through. I got to a check point yesterday on my lunch break and to go back to work. Came back to finish up the level and it started me back from the very beginning.

Not very friendly at all...
