Pearl 24p Input

1113 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  scaesare
I recently picked up a BDP-1 Blu Ray playback deck.

Within the deck's setup, there's the option to enable 24p output. When doing so, and playing back to my Sony Pearl via HDMI, the Pearl's info screen says "1080p 60hz"

Questions:

1) Is there some other setting to twiddle on the deck I'm missing?

2) Is the Pearl just mis-representing what it's really receiving?

3) My HDMI connection is switched thru my AVR (Pioneer Elite 84), which purportedly will pass-thru 1080p signals. Has anybody successfully gotten 24p thru one of these units?

Thanks all...

Maybe option 2. When I fed the Pearl 1080/48 (24PsF) the menu on the Pearl reported a signal input of 1080p/50. However, HD DVD motion was more fluid so it did appear to be processing the 48 signal.

Do you notice any difference in the in fluidity of motion esp panning when using BD @ 1080p/24 even if the Pearl report 1080p/60 ?

Was hard to tell. I didn't find any specific places in Casino Royale that seemed particularly telling...
On the BDP-S1 you have to enable 24p in the menu - AND switch the resolution (via remote) to 1080p "Direct."

Also - the BDP-S1 is awaiting a firmware update to correct judder w/ AVC/MPEG4 encodes. The 24p output works fine with MPEG2 and VC1 encodes. Casino Royale is AVC - so if you output 24p correctly you will get judder. I had to watch Casino Royale (also Open Season, X-Men, The Descent, League Ex Gentlemen, First Blood) in 1080p60.
Aha... thanks John and reio-ta.

I had not realized the need to switch the option on via the remote as well.

Actually it looks like this BR player may be going back to the store anyway... perhaps the next one I get will be able to handle AVC without issue at 24p.

Thanks for the help.
