Hi.

I'm about to buy a new screen and I'm interested in placing my speakers behind the screen. I have some questions ..

-> What is the recommended distance between the screen and the seating position using perforated screens for HT?

-> What are the differences between different brands? (Stewart or Draper and so on ...)

-> What gain to use with a regular 7" CRT, 600 lumen.

Hoping for someone to have the experience to answer my questions.

Thanks!!

The seating distance is first determined from screen size and video resolution (doubled, quad, etc.). The next calculation then is to determine if, due to visual acuity, you'd be too close to the screen. I haven't found a screen (16:9) that was 92" wide or wider with a doubled picture where you'd be too close.

The first obvious difference is Stewart is the only one that is THX rated which is your only assurance of it's video and audio qualities ... you know it's accoustically transparent. As to other differences perforation size, uniformity of perforations, acoustic transparency, viability of the surface (coating), and customer service. (Stewart has the high water mark on this count.)

Well, once again, that depends upon NTSC, line doubled, tripled picture resolution and screen size. (In most residential sized theaters, you don't get far enough off axis for color off axis color shift to come into play.)

Is it possible for a huge screen to be acoustically transparent? Just wondering. Since I'm considering this myself.

Having a perforated screen shouldn't make any difference on this; it all depends on the projector and screen size. Now having said that, if you get *too* close to a perforated screen, you will start noticing the perforations.

not sure, but a Stewart screen is THX rated and I have not noticed any problems with the fidelity of my center speaker.

I have a dwin hd700 projector and I am displaying on a Stewart 2.0 UltraMatte screen. My seating is at 12' and 15'; not a bad seat in the house and the picture is fantastic (YMMV).
