Hi All - I've been considering a perforated screen. I only have about 10" behind where the screen will go, and my proposed center will fit in this space.

So, is it appropriate for the center to be say 1" behind the screen or is more distance required?

Thanks

Jeff,

It depends on what type of screen you are referring to. The performance of perforated vinyl screens may be compromised slightly due to more severe comb filtering effects from having the center channel speaker positioned that closely to the screen. You would be in better shape if you could position the speaker 6-8" in back of the screen. The result will be a smoother measured frequency response. The difference may or may not be evident to you in actual practice. An alternative approach would be to use a woven fabric screen such as ClearPix2 from Screen Research. Comb filtering is not an issue with this material since there is no reflection of sound off the back of the screen towards the speaker.
