I just found out that I can get an extremely good deal on these spkrs if I act quickly. My local dealer is just trying to get rid of them... That certainly gives one pause. I've tried a search on the net and found very few results.

Those I have found are pretty good. Apparently, these are 6 ohm spkrs. I think that means that I would need a higher quality amp than I would need for 8 ohm spkrs. The money I save could definitely be spent that way.

Looking for advice. I have also found Wharfedale Opus 3s for half price if they're still available and am SERIOUSLY looking at Gallo ref 3s.

I am trying to build a new 2 ch sys with an eye towards ht down the line (maybe).

All advice is welcome.

you won't get much more dramatically different speakers than the phase tech 9.1s and the gallo ref III....

The phase techs are definitely on the warm side of things and have a nice full bass through the midrange. infinitely listenable and not too terribly picky about placement... they're farily efficient and surprisingly easy to drive.... also a bit more forgiving of less than stellar electronics....

the gallos are not for everyone.... I seriously question the hearing of some people who have commented on them because my impressions don't even remotely mirror those thoughts..... the advice or statements made to the effect that everyone hears differently and everyone has a different preference for what they want out of a speaker are very very true.... :)

The PC 9.1's are actually 4 Ohm, but with a fairly high sensitivity rating of 92dB. The PC 3.1II's (which I own) are 6 Ohm with a 92 sensitivity rating as well. Outboard pro amps would be a cheap easy solution for driving the PC 9.1's. there are a couple of active threads about Pro amps in the AMPS/Receiver forum.

There is alot of good info on Phase Tech speakers in this thread: Phase Technology Speakers .

Good Luck,

As an owner of the 9.1's I may be biased, but the amount of enjoyment I have received from these speakers is nothing short of amazing. When I frist got these, I thought I had an entirely new CD collection. I heard subtle details on CD's i've been listening to for 20 years. Phase Tech engineers an incredible product.

James,

Having the 3.1 II's now, I know what you are talking about. The imaging seperation is incredible too. I've not heard anything like it in this price range.

I use a PC 3.1 II horizontally as a center channel. I have yet to miss a single word in any movie. And the tonal match to the 9.1's is flawless. Phase Tech is really a hidden gem.

Just wanted to let all of you kind folks know what I have done to this point. I bought the PC 9.1's for $400. They are indeed 4 ohm spkrs. I am presently using an old Sony rcvr. A friend has proposed selling me an Adcom amp for next to nothing. That would be the gfa 555. (not the 555 II) I may still try to find the II on an auction site. The reviews that I have seen for the II indicate that any shortfalls ine the original have been addressed. If I can't find a nice one used, maybe I'll splurg and buy a new one since I saved on the speakers.

Regardless, I will need to get a pre/tuner.

Anyhow, I have settled for these spkrs for now. I can't give a good acconunting of their performance just yet due to the lack of a good amp. When I am able to upgrade, which should be soon, I will submit my humble opinion.
