Yes I know this model had nasty reiliability issues and some were just impossible to fix and Philips swapped them out.

But they have the Faroujda 2200 chips in them and were very , very good dvd players also. I had forgotten about mine as I boxed it up and did not use it after Philips swapped out my unit right before they discontinued that model.

Oddly enough, I did not ever have many problems with my original but on one of the firmware updates I got a postcard in the mail one day offering to swap it out and just like that they did. I got the very last, updated optics that went into their later dvd model recorders with all the features of the 985.

My question is, and please lets keep the thread to my question and not turn it into a 985 bashing thread. Anyone else remember it has that great Faourjda chip and use it as a player?

The picture is very, very good. I am liking better than the new Denon 1910 through DVI I just bought, as the 1910 has lots of blocking issues with blacks and I watch alot of sci fi material which has what else, lots of scenes in space, which is BLACK!!! Just curious... anyone using it for a player?

Its not better than my Bravo D1, but its actually quite good.

Is it too late to get Phillips to swap? I bought a 985 the second month it came out - after three months of 'disc error' messages I put it up the attic. Can the bugs just be repaired?

I read online and heard from several dealers Philips extended the warranty on these 985's to two years. If its true, probably due to all the problems they had. So if you are within that two year window and its true , yes they should fix it or give you a newer model unit.

If you are lucky they will just put the later model optics in it like they did mine and you get features of the 985 as opposed to most of the later models which don't have the build quality and metal chasis and all the features the 985 had.
