I dont yet have a DVD player and I was look at the Philips DVD712, AFAIK its the best Philips non progressive scan DVD player out there. I dont need progressive scan, since I dont have component and I have a standard defination TV. Since all my other stuff is Philips and Im satified with them I thought Id continue to use their products. I will have it hooked up to my HT rcvr via toslink (and posibaly 6 channel analog) and SVHS. The 712 has can decode both DD and DTS, but Im only consereded with DD5.1.

Any thoughts?

You don't have a DVD player now and you said you didn't need a progressive-scan DVD player. However, I think there is no harm to have a progressive-scan one if it is affordable. You may want to have this function in the future. If you like Philips products, you may choose DVD-Q50.

Progressive scan would be a nice safeguard for the future, whats the MSRP of the Q50?
