I am at a crossroad where I am not sure what my choice should be for my X1:

1. Philips Q50

2. Pioneer 755i or 656 DVD player.

3. Philips 963SA

Questions:

Option #1, have seen the video playback through the Faroudja DCDi chipset. Its amazing but not too sure about the 5.1 sound. Also, will the chipset be used if I were to opt for the progressive scan?

Option #2, no onboard DCDi chipset for the DVD player. Its been well reviewed. Other than that, I have not heard if its good.

Option #3, newer Philips model. 13-bit video processing with Faroudja DCDi chipset.

I will be using the component for the progressive scan. Is this a better way?

Please help!

I would not try #2 sight unseen. In my experience the Faroudja processing in the X1 will beat anthing except a Faroudja in the DVD player.

Philips would scare me because of the littany of complaints about the reliability of their DVD players. Both decks deliver gorgeous pictures.

I still use 480i off a cheap Sharp deck and I am very happy with the picture. The X1 makes cheap decks look amazing thanks to DCDi.

Thanks Jim!

Quick question: I tried using my old Toshiba 2108 DVD player's component output to the VGA input of the X1. Nothing came out! Is it because of the DVD player is non-progressive scan?

Yeah it won't work unless you go through the composite or s-video so the X1 will scale up to 480p.
