i've searchd through the forums and have read that the phone line is not need'd at this time and is only for or will be for pay per view. I called voom and was told they couldnt even begin to process my order without a phone #. I guess this is leaving me voomless because i only have a cell phone, no house phone.Should i call back and try to talk to someone else or is this a for SURE issue nowa days? Thanks you for replying..

Mine called back on the 17th. Voom just started having their STB's initiate a call back. Folks that didn't have the STB connected at the time of the call back inititation turned on the the STB to find no service available and had to connect to a phone line and manually initiate the call back. This is the first instance of call backs and hasn't happened again since. You may be out of luck. The only thing that might work is if you can take the STB to a friend or family members home and have it call from there. But, that is kind of shady.

Thanks again for replying so quickly. I currently have dish and was planning on switching to voom. But i dont see myself getting a house phone set up and paying a extra $30 a month. Just for voom . My thought is , if they didnt set there system up using a phone they would pull 60% more customers being that cell phone's rule the world and most people use those as there everyday phone nowadays. So sorry VOOM but u just lost a customer, along with the other million handfulls that are gonna be in my same position

I agree over half the population of the US has a cell phone, I think that classifies as most. I just saw the numbers in the paper the other day, it was amazing how high it was. My father goes to Taiwan and China two or three times a year and he said over there people have like two or three phones each. No matter where you are over there you have a signal. The governments realized it would be cheaper to build an infastructure to support cell phones rather than wiring everybody's house for landlines.

But back to the topic, I too, only have a cell phone and I have been told by others on this forum that I NEED to have a home phone. My company pays for my cell phone so why do I need a home phone. Voom is a small company struggling to get new subs and to keep them, their churn rate was something like 50%, and they go out and eliminate a big market segment like that? Doesnt make sense to me.

Don't worry no thin skinned folks here. I still think most people have a land line at home...........5 years from now, who knows.

I think the requirement to have land lines and pro installations is a way to end voom piracy before it begins. I think both is cutting down on "some" sales

I think most people that are the types to get rid of a land line and go 100% cell are the same type that would be more willing to sign up for a new HD Sat service and give it a whirl.

Want to really fight piracy VOOM? Don't broadcast a signal, cause that's ultimately the only way to really fight it. Or for starters, don't use STB's that use removeable and programmable EPROM's.

I was hoping they wouldn't enforce the policy, since I'm NOT going to have another cable pulled to the HD set, but hopefully my local cable will pick up more HD.

How does requiring a land line stop piracy? Neither DISH or D* require them, nor does either of the two Canadian systems. They all have alternate methods of ordering PPV. (I know there are piracy problems w. the other systems.)
