I currently have a Philips Tivo with a non-HDTV tv and will be soon upgrading to HD. Obviously, I will be getting an HD receiver. Using Directv, is there any way that I can hook up the old Tivo and the new HD box and get picture in picture? I figured since I have to buy a new receiver and I still want to use Tivo, I would give it a shot. I assume I can still use my Tivo box (to pause, fast forward, etc.) and the HD box on with the one TV? Any suggestions would be great. Thanx.

I guess I'm a little confused here...

That said...

Hook up your HD DirecTV receiver to the component in/DVI in/or HDMI in on your TV.

Then take the old Tivo unit, non-HD, and hook up the S-Video outputs to the S-Video input on your new TV...

Then you can PIP, assuming your TV allows you to PIP.

are you talking about a DirecTivo that you already have or a stand alone Tivo? If you are talking about a DirecTivo you already have, then yes both can be hooked up to one TV at once. BUT, you must pay the extra $4.99/m fee for the extra box, even though it is on the same TV. You CAN NOT record HDTV or pause HDTV with a regular DirecTivo. What you need is the HD DirecTivo, it combines both boxes into one, making the best sat receiver of all time. you can only use PIP if you TV allows you to make it from two externally tuned signals. many don't and some do.

Ok, well it sounds much simpler now. I thought that there was some other type of setup that I had to do in order to get PIP. I do realize I can't record in HD, I just want to be able to watch SD with my DirectTivo. Here's another newb question: How simple is it to switch in and out of PIP? Since each receiver will be going through a different source (i.e DVI and S-video), will it be a pain to keep switching from those sources? Am I making this more complicated than it should be? Thanks in advance!

P.S. I will be getting a GWIII

It all depends on the Make and Model of your TV.

Just make sure you test drive the TV and remote before buying...

Why not.
Chances are you'll need an input with HDCP if you want to play future high-definition media -- like HD-DVD.

You'll likely also need it for digital output from a DirecTV HDTV receiver at some point. The VOOM HDTV service already requires HDCP on the DVI output -- according to VOOM, this is a standard requirement in new contracts for some existing HD channels. Older contracts did not require it, but it will be a requirement after existing contracts expire.

one day, not too far into the future ALL HD broadcats will be encrypted, including any HD DVR or HD DVD or blu-Ray players feed. your DVI port MUST be HDCP or it will be of minimal to no use to you in the future. over time you would eventually lose all access to HD programming, as they try to phase out component video in favor of DVI and HDMI only.

I am still confused. Does this mean that "chances" and "future" media will render my componet set obsolete. Boy i am still waiting for hd dvd and it is a good thing that i dont use voom or D*. Will i be safe with comcast cable?

stevie,

You'll be fine with component -- for at least the next several years. Ultimately, Dish, DirecTV, Comcast, etc will phase out component (or at least, full resolution over component), but you'll probably have a new set with DVI/HDMI and HDCP by the time they do.
