Picked up Polar Express

Well, thanks to EchoBaseGeek for PMing me the information regarding Batman Begins (we catch each other at Best Buy almost every week), I was just able to pick up both from Target. Both sold for $19.99 each.

Since they had to go in the back and get BB, I asked if they had any others. Sure enough, he came out with a stack of HD-DVDs, but no other early releases. They don't seem to have a problem selling them as they don't have a release date attached to them. They did tell me they plan on setting the display up towards the middle of the week and they should have more by then.

Now to watch Polar Express with the kids! I'll post some kind of review tonight.

Enjoy! I've ordered it on dvdpacific.com, but they have not shipped it yet...
This experience has a very familiar ring to it. Best Buy initially did this very same thing until someone higher up put a stop to that.

I'd say make a run for it before they catch on. I know I will
So, just finished the movie.

Overall, pretty darn good. Sound is excellent and very dynamic surround work. Then again, a lot of rollercoaster type sequences required it. However, voices were very clear, especially the songs.

Visually it was very 3-Dish. Beautiful colors and very detailed textures.

This is the first I'd seen the movie, so I can't compare to the DVD, but I did enjoy it. Now onto Batman. :)

Just went back to Target and asked them about Polar Express. 5 minutes later I am walking out the front door with a HD DVD copy of it. Yeah Target!
Wow, I might just hit up Target tomorrow. Screw my Amazon.com order.

To all who found it - were these Target Super Stores or just regular Targets.....?

Got mine at a Greatland, but the regular good old Target also had it :)
sounds like you guys did well!

Enjoy the Xmas vibe in October!

;)
Actually, it worked out well...considering there were no releases I was going to purchase this week. Now I can keep an even balance of a couple of purchases a week.

:)
This disc looks and sounds SO nice. I was watching it with my fiancee' and we were just floored

I bought my copies of Batman Begins & The Polar Express from a regular Target.
Are you in Nashville? If so, you might be the reason my local store is sold out. :(
Here is my five minute review:

PQ - I know this sounds strange, but to me, this HD DVD started off kind of slow. What I mean is that the beginning of the movie begins in a dark room. There are no bright colors are anything that really pops out. Plus the character models are not like Pixar movies, they are more lifelike, but also not as eye popping. But don't worry, things pick up real quick once they get in the train. In fact the very first scene with the train, you can see each individual snowflake and you can begin to see that this igs going to be a visual marvel.

From there, the PQ gets it's opportunity to shine. You can see all the little details on the train. Also there are some very fast action scenes, and this movie blows right through them without a touch of macroblocking or any flaws. Without giving anything away, the climax of the movie looks incredible and trust me, you will be blown away.

Needless to say, there is no grain or any flaws in the print. This one is absolutely near the top of the Pier 1 PQ scale.

SQ - Haven't watched the whole thing, but from what I could tell, it is an excellent soundtrack. The bass really was kicking in this. Need to watch the whole thing though to give it a fair review.

Extras - Bookmarks are here and a whole bunch of special features. They are in SD, but there is a lot there to watch.

Bottom Line - Animation is here on HD DVD and it does not dissapoint. If you have kids or want to show off how animation looks in HD, then do not miss this when it comes out on the 10th.

By the way, picked this up at the Target in Lynnwood WA. They only had one copy, so sorry about taking it :)

I just have to laugh (but then I wasn't the one who missed it). My friend called that Target, they said they had "Batman Begins", he asked them to hold it, jumped in his car from Everett, and when he got to the Lynnwood store they said that somebody must have already bought it.

There are about 3 things at the top of my list of best looking movies I have ever seen. "Monster House" in 3D on a digital cinema DLP, and "Nascar 3D" and "The Polar Express" in 3D IMAX. I can still picture some of the scenes with the snow falling and remember how incredible they looked.

BTW: What kind of display are you watching it on?

What about people like me, who genuinely liked the movie? Should I buy it? :)
Hmm. Do you have kids or want to show off animation in HD? If not, I would say no. ;)

Polar Express in IMAX 3D was impressive indeed. The IMAX had enough resolution to show the resolution limit of the presumably 4K digital master. There was at times some aliasing in fine detail.

No, I am in Chattanooga so you can't blame me. ;) I think that I am the only HD DVD owner in Chattanooga since it seems that all of the stores around here have the same amount of HD DVD stock everytime I go in them.
