Picture Quality Problems with PVR500

806 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  sgthavoc
I just got my PVR500 and I'm not impressed. The video quality is no where near what the TV does without it. I'm hoping that I just have something setup wrong. I have tried BeyondTV and I get the bad video and audio sync issues. I can get rid of the audio sync with SageTV, but the video quality is still bad. I am using an Audiogy 2 sound card, 2 gigs of high speed ram, an AMD X2 4400, my drives are in a RAID 0 config, and I am using a Geforce 6800GS.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Need more info. What kind of signal? Is it split? Are live tv and recordings poor or is it just one or the other? Etc...

I've been using a 500 for about the last two weeks with Meedio. At first I was pretty ticked because my picture quality was terrible. Over time though by reading posts on various other forums aimed towards the WinTV cards I got it cleared up quite a bit. I'm running just basic cable with no set top box and have the signal split 3 times. One goes straight to the TV (so I can watch my broadcast HD programs), other goes to my modem, and last one goes to the 500 card. I'm running the DVI-HDMI out of a 6600gt into the TV.

A few things I've tried (not sure which helped the most because I did them all at the same time)

Newest drivers for video card

Newest drivers for PVR card

Download the Tweak Tool and fine tune the PVR card (this seemed to help quite a bit)

Try not to split the signal if possible

A few people reported they had to RMA the 500 because of a bad connection for the input cable. I know on mine when I first hooked it up Fox was clear and ABC was nothing but snow. I jiggled the cable on the card and it cleared up ABC; no idea why it only happened to that one channel. As it stands now after some tweaking the picture quality is ALMOST as good as watching regular tv. Recordings still leave a bit to be desired but the quality is still better than VHS.

I searched the forums at these two sites (geared towards the Hauppauge cards) and found a great deal of information along with the tools you need to tweak the 500 card.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried everything that I can think of and have read everything I can find, but I'm still not happy. I just ordered the Nvidia DualTV and I am going to send the PVR-500 back. Very disappointing.
good move with the dualtv tell me how that works out for you i'll be ordering one shortly.
I'll post and update once it comes in. I had is 2nd dayed so I should have it on wed.
Well I got my DualTV today. All I can say is "WOW!!!!". The difference is almost as much as SD and HD. I have to admit my calbe is not the best and I could have probably spend $50 on a signal booster and got the PVR500 to work, but the Nvidia does it all on its own. The picture is much better than what the tv does on its own. I also do not have the audio sync issue. I have not had a chance to record any thing, but live tv is great. I am thinking about purchasing another one. It has been the best move that I have made so far on my HTPC. I don't think you can go wrong with this card and you get the Nvidia decoder for free!
Right now, more than one DualTV card is not supported by the drivers, as stated by an NVIDIA support email posted on the Sage forums.

P
Where did you order the card from?

Thanks.
