My 16:9 56inch toshiba will display a 480p input from progressive Dvd player in Standard 4:3 format. When it goes in to this mode with 480p instead of grey bars, it seems to actually adjust the guns to only fire on the center of the screen. It seems like an ideal way to watch full frame DVDs, but There is some pincushion effect (center of image bowed in compared to top and bottom).

How do I correct this? I went in to service mode and fiddled with 64 point convergence for a while, but I was afraid I might be screwing it up. Is there another way to fix geometry, or was the convergence grid the correct approach?

Assuming I can fix this, should I be using this screen format often or is it likley to damage the set? If it is a valid format I might consider buying an iScan so I can use a single inout on the Toshiba. Chaging inputs on the Toshiba is tedious as you have to cycle through them all, slowly. Any hints to change inoput faster on an X81 set?
