My Pio DV-59Avi came in this last Friday, hooked to my Pio 1110 via

HDMI, set the 59 on DIRECT mode @ 1280x720P and the results

were awesome. Near HD PQ with no tweeking. Great features!!

IMAX Super Speedway was on PPVHD this weekend, watched it and then

played the DVD and was amazed at how close the two were.

Superbit DVDs could pass for HD. Great sound quality also on DVD-A and

SACD. The remote seems a bit cheesey but good functions.

So much for my collection of other DVD players:

Denon 2900

Samsung HD931

Panasonic RP82

Best $1K I have spent so far.

Thank you Freddy14

The Denon 2900 definitely outputs good video and high def

audio but the Pioneer DV-59AVi beats it in all respects.

My video connection is via HDMI>HDMI and my audio is analog

multi-channel to an Integra DTR 7 receiver with 8 MK THX speakers.

I have a wide selction of DVD-A and SACD from jaz to oldies rock&roll.

The dynamic range sounds better on the 59. I am now even using the

decoder on the 59 instead of the DTR7 for DTS and Dolby.

I did temporarily connect the component on the 59 just I could compare

apples & apples to the 2900 video signal. I only ran a few dvds but

DVE was one them along with FE and the 59 did better.

This player is also a tweekers delight. If you don't like the look of

something you can certainly adjust it.

Glad to hear that. I have the Integra DTR-7.3 with Paradigm speakers so hopefully it will sound similar to your set-up. One question though, letting the player decode Dolby works better than the Integra's internal's?

The sound quality is simular but the sense of being there is greater

when using the pio 59 decoder. This is not a technical observation.

I wish the Integra had iLink for a digital path for DVD-A and SACD.

I am debating getting this player now or waiting for some of the new dvi upscaling players to hit the market in the next few months at less than half the cost. However, I want an upscaling player BAD and the wait is killing me. I can afford to get this player now but am having a hard time justifying it knowing that in a few months new dvi players will be out for a few hundred bucks...I don't have interest in dvd-a and sacd so that is a non factor. I want top quality video as I only plan to use it for dvds.

rlindo ... your debate is justified. I too could not wait so I went ahead with this $1K + purchase. I have no doubt that equally (or almost equally) good player will soon be available for less than 1/2 this cost.

+ the remote stinks

I went with it because of the redundancy of Elite to Pioneer 5040 and "pure" HDMI connection. I am not dissappointed (except for remote).

I also went with it because I could not stand all of the decision making going on forever (and the returning of inferior players to BB). It was too demanding and paying the extra bucks now saved me from obsessing over this.

And I probably got a better player than the ones to come out for 1/2 (or 1/3) price ... but probably not THAT much better.

I just got my European version Pioneer dvd 868avi, but there is some problem my I made video connection HMDI>DVI to sim 300HT Link I'm unable get the HMDI setting, therefore I am unable to get the picture, however, with video connection is HDMI>HDMI there is no problem.

Any suggestion how to resolve HDMI>DVI video connection.

Thanks.

The Panasonic RP82 is a good DVD player for the $$ but the PQ of

the Pio DV59AVi at component video out is better.

I had the oppertunity to run the following from my collection.

I had enough inputs to compare any three of the following:

Pioneer DV-59AVi

Denon 2900

Panasonic RP-82

Samsung HD931

I listed them above in the order of performance, best first.

All connected component ports with MonsterCables.

The HDMI path proved to be the best of all, PQ much better than

would be expected from DVD.

I agree.

I also got my 59AVi last week and I am also running it to my 1110HD via HDMI with the same wow factor.

I tried the Smmy 931 with a DVI-HDMI cable and while the results were good, I experienced a major audio sync problem.

What do you make of this?

Have you tried the Avia sharpness pattern?

I did follow this topic with a bit of concern but saw enough posts

lately which gave some validation to the true digital path claim.

I do have the DVE and saw Spears suggestion about the sharpness

test but a local ISF tech I spoke to about this stated that because

of what the sharpness adjustment effects that this would not really

prove anything other than the effect being less.

After having this panel for a couple weeks now I am so impressed with

the PQ that I really don't care about that anymore.

I am considering having it ISF calibrated after breakin.

This adds two new picture modes to the selection menu that we

don't see now, a DAY mode and a NIGHT mode as I understand it.

We would still have the original options available.

He has done 3 of the 1110s so far and said it helps the flesh

tones and contrast for all inputs. Just another level of WOW.

Tulsa1,

I tend to agree, the controversy is pretty much moot as I am totally satisfied with the PQ.

A day and night calibration would be very cool. In my case I guess I'll have to have the Tech. over for lunch and keep him for dinner since I can't darken my room.

I am thinking of purchasing the 59AVI because I want to use the upconvert to 1080i feature. The rest of my equipment is just old enough not to have DVI or HDMI. Does anyone know whether the 1080i output works through a component cable connection?

Afaik none of the DVD players will upconvert over component. The Momitsu and Bravo might, but the Bravo is reported to have pretty crummy image quality over component.

The studios don't want to see DVD players upconverting over component; they want HDCP on the signal. You should be able to set up an HTPC to do this if you really need it though.
