New to the Form and can't believe the info that's out there. I am from Windsor (Canada) and am considering the purchase of a Pio Elite 1140 HD. With everything considered I can save a min. $1200. buying on-line. I realize there is no guarantee however that is a fair chunk of change to consider and it has me thinking. The USA retailer is a 4.5 star and has good reviews. Given that Elite is a top of the line brand is it worth the risk? Any suggestions or advise. Thanks

Hey Wally...

All I can really offer in terms of purchasing any Elite products online is that Pioneer does not allow ANYONE to sell their Elite line, online! This becomes a pretty important issue, if you have any service issues. Pioneer is absolutely fanatical about not standing behind any of their products that were not purchased through an "Authorized Dealer". Keep in mind that even if the company you're referring to is in fact an authorized Pioneer dealer, they still wouldn't be authorized to sell any of the Elite line on the internet, so Pioneer would not honor your warranty!

But what about purchasing a reputable 3 year extended warranty with it? It would definitely be cheaper than the $1100.00 savings and would be one more year than the factory warranty. Sounds like a makings of a winning proposition.

You cannot "Extend" a warranty that doesn't exist!!!!! I looked into this angle in the past, as a workaround. I have been told that if you don't have a warranty from the manufacturer, which you will not, if you purchase from a non-authorized dealer, you cannot purchase an extended warranty!

I haven't checked specifically recently, but I know in the past that a warranty could in fact be purchased and covered. A 3 year extended warranty is for 3 years from the date of purchase, not from the end of the original. It would definitely be something worthwhile to check out. Maybe the company you were dealing with wasn't offering it, but I see no reason a warranty company refusing to sell something that they beg consumers to buy. They make huge money on them.

Quit saying "extended warranty". If no warranty exists then there is nothing to extend. It would be a maintenance contract from a 3rd party. Then you would need to ask yourslef if that maintenance comapny will still be in business 3 years from now, level of service and recourse if you don't like the service or repair

For the record, I contacted RepairMaster, who is a pretty well-known warranty company and one that many of the sponsors of this forum sell. They told me that if there is not a manufacturer's warranty in place (Which there would not be, if purchasing Pioneer from a non-authorized delaer), the product cannot be covered by an "extended warranty". I have to sound like a broken record here, but if there is no warranty in place, there is nothing to extend. It's really not that complicated!

Quit telling me what I can call it.

Seriously, does it really make a difference what it's called? Like I said in my post, it's best to call and discuss it before hand. We can all sit here and speculate, but that's what a phone is for. Pick it up, ask the pertinent questions and then use that information to base a decision.
