My experience is that unless the signal is multi-channel, Auto Surround will see just two channels and decide "Stereo".
DVD in DTS, fine. DVD in Dolby Digital 5.1, fine. My DirecTivo has an optical input to the 1014, and only if the broadcast was in DD 5.1 does Auto Surround choose anything except Stereo.
I find the Auto Surround to be sort of overkill, in that even if the receiver is set to Dolby PL II and something in DD 5.1 comes on, it'll switch to Dolby Digital anyway. So I just leave the DVD input set to Dolby PL II:Movie, the TV set to Dolby PL II:Movie, and the signal takes care of itself.
If your Comcast digital cable box is connected with a digital output to the 1014, you need to choose something that is broadcast in 5.1 (lots of stuff on HBO, actually) to see it select something else. Don't know anything about the Playstation...
