HI EVERYBODY!

haha, didn't mean to scare you all like that. I have follwed this forum for a while now (thanks to the admin for allowing guests to browse without joining. I have worked for Best Buy Home Theater, where I got really interested in both Car and Home Video. I eventually got promoted to Magnolia Home Theater Senior (mostly based on the information I picked up here! Thanks!). Anyway, I am pretty good at understanding video features, but audio is over my head.

In case it helps, I currently own a Pioneer PDP-5060 (last one with media box). I have Mirage Omni-towers, Omni Center, and I ebay'd a pair of nano-sats for my rear. God I love these speakers, as they can be placed anywhere and still sound good! I move apartments a lot ( 22 yr old student). I have a Monster Power 5400 MK II. I have a Pioneer DV-400V DVD. I currently own a VSX-1016. I am a Pioneer fanboy... anyone noticed?

Here's my problem... I have one of those stands with a false wall to mount plasmas on and not ruin the walls of my RENTED apartment. I was under the impression that all receivers are the same size in everything but height. NOOOOOOOOOOOO sir-e-bob! This thing is almost 19 inches deep! I cant close the door of the cabinet its in! I also cant drill out the back! I am wondering, after looking at the Pioneer website, if I might have a solution... the Pioneer VSX-917!

What is the difference between between the 917 vs the 1016. I could sell the 1016, and save 5 inches, and break even on $$$. They both seem to have the same amount of HD inputs, and have the same WPC... if anybody could clear up my ignorance, that would be great.

Thanks in advance guys... you rock!

what does HYBRID amplification do? Hybrid leads me to believe that the unit will take power from somewhere else to supply the amp, but where?

what is the benefit of dual DSP?

thanks again?

I have the 1016 and I am by no means an audiophile, and your speaker set up sounds better than mine, but even with my middle of the road system, when watching a DVD movie, adding the THX sound field adds a lot of texture and definition to the sound. Obviously more "movie like". Much nicer. I don't know what the diff in price is, but it's a nice addition to have.

I'll chime in to say that the deal breaker for me is that the 917 doesn't have preamp outs and the 1016 does. Haven't seen the specs yet on the 1017, but I'm hoping it has preamp outs. Still, the Onkyo 605 at about the same price range doesn't have preamp outs either. Have to go all the way to the 705 at 900 smackers.

Yes, preamp outs are a big deal to me.

Hi All,

I recently upgraded to the 1016 from the 517 for the THX, 7.1, etc. The sound is great, but with available speaker outputs, it looks like you get a choice of either 7 channel surround and no 2nd zone or 5 channel surround with a 2d zone for another room. (I had 2nd zone on the 517 and could play CDs in stereo to the kitchen when I wasn't watching a movie). I'm a bit disappointed that you can't get both full 7 channel surround on zone A and separate stereo sound on zone B.

So, I'm going to try to install a cheap amp to the preamp outputs for the kitchen speakers. Any advice on a small, cheap 2-channel amp just for this? Thanks.
