Pioneer 42'' Problem

619 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  the47ronin
I just recently bought a Pioneer 42''PDP-4270HD from best buy. First I must say that the quality of this TV is great but I have a problem with it. I have a dead pixel in the middle of the screen, although not visible from normal viewing it is kind of annoying but my problem is with image retention or possible burn in.

I allowed the TV to break in (approx 150-175 hours) before tempting to playing my Xbox 360 on it, which I felt was enough time. I played a game the other day and it has a HUD in the top right of the screen that stays static. I made sure to pause the screen often and to let the cut scenes play. The longest it was on screen without a pause would be 20 min. Now it looks like it may have burned it as it has not gone away fully since. I have played many movies on it since and during bright scenes the outline of that HUD can be scene. Also when the TV is on a normal blank black screen you can also see it when close up to the TV.

Is this all normal? I’m scared to even play another game. What can I do?

Wow...I also have the Pioneer 4270 with about 150-200 hours on it (I'm guessing, I have not been counting). So far I have not experienced any IR on my TV. I was going to have a friend come over with his 360 soon (I'm dying to see how HD games look on this TV), but now you have me a bit scared. Let us know how it turns out. I bet it will go away after a few days.
the47ronin, yep, that's common.

You need to give it at least 1000 hours of breakin (stage 3) before playing any console or PC games. You can then play some games. 150 hours ain't gonna cut it, that's for stage 1 pre-breakin. :D At your state you are barely ok to watch some broadcasts with logos on, but still need to run some full screen DVD movies to help wipe em out the IR's. STOP playing game for right now and just keep on breaking-in. Watch lots of DVD movies at full screen(no black bars on top and botom nor sides) for a month and depending on how deep your IR is it'll go away eventually. Listen to me and good things will happen to you.

My 2 yr old 7UY is a freakin tank now. I can play games or whatever and I get no IR and no burnin.

WOW. A 1000 hours for break in?

That's quite alot. I thought the whole "Plasmas are quite fragile." statement was superflous.

Heh... so even if we break this thing in for 200 to 400 hours... run it on Game Mode... and turn down contrast... it still has a chance of IR... and slight chance of burn in?

yea John, for hours of gaming the stage 3 breakin is needed. 100 hours ain't gonna cut. 200, nope.... not even close. Now if you watch DVD movies at widescreen with black bars top and bottom wouldn't be as bad, because the images within the viewing screen is constantly moving. But for playing games with static HUDs can cause deep IR or possibility of burnin if abused.

If you turn down the contrast and frequenty change the title of the games then you could get away with it. It's also really depend on the playing habits too. Use your good judgements and proceed with caution.

Also you may get better chance with console games with images that are softer, and not as sharp. That would help too. Try to avoid high contrast settings and sharpness.

If you must play game right now on a brand new set of plasma then I suggest you lower the contrast and sharpness and play each game for shorter length of time, and then switch to a different game and play that, then switch it again. Now take a DVD movie out and play that at full screen. That'll give your plasma a good work out. You can get away with it then. :D

Basically, you need to go through full breakin process. You will then be able to play any games, with razor sharp, contrasty games as well without problems.

Great advice. I am assuming there is a Master Plasma Break in thread somewhere around here. That will be a good reference place right?

yea, here.. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=608677

It's a freakin huge thread... will take forever to read that thing. That thread also contains some screenshots I have posted about my 7UY long term IR and how long it took to get it cured but that's because I didn't give enough time breaking in. User's fault.

Also take things into considerations that the plasma technology is constantly improving and increased resistence of burn-in. Today's brand new plasmas should handle better than my 7UY.
Thanks Cheese. You've been awesome help. :)

I am so looking foward to going into the Plasma Market. I got a 1080p LCD... and while the picture is great during the day, dark scenes in a home theater setting is not satisfactory. The viewing angles and the black levels are not up to par.

Now i just gotta decide between Panny and Pio.
thanks for the info! I will stop playing games until I reach proper break in. Thanks again
