You can assign a different manual / predefined recording Setting for each recording.

Manual chapter marks:
are set by you after you have copied your program to HDD. You can do it either in the HDD (and then add that title to the copy list) or in the copy list itself.
Automatic chapter marks:
Are added automatically (in the interval defined) to the DVD-R(W) when you do a Real Time Copy from HDD to DVD.
Thumbnails:
This is the video frame that will appear in the DVD Menu per each title that the final DVD will have. You set these thumbnails by playing the title, hit pause in the frame that you want to appear in the menu, hit "Navi Mark" button on your remote. Simple as that.
This should be the last thing you do (to all titles in the copy list) before you do a high speed copy to DVD-R(W).

You can use copy lists for either Video mode or VR mode.
Video mode: used in DVD-R or DVD-RW media.
VR Mode: used in DVD-RW media.
You should use video mode for higher compatibility (if you want your recordings to be played in other players).
You should use VR mode, basically, if you want to put some titles in a DVD-RW (using High Speed copy) and then (later) put them back in your recorder HDD (using also High Speed copy)- a sort of lossless (temporary) backup of your HDD.
There are also other uses for VR mode, but I think that's not what you want to do.

Only playback.
As an advice: In your first recording to DVD, you could use a DVD-RW in Video Mode to see the final results. If everything is Ok (i mean, thumbnails, titles names, etc) then you copy from Copy List again to your final DVD-R.
(In my two first attempts to create a DVD-R I did something wrong, so I wasted 2 DVD-R, so that's why i suggest this).
Hope that helps.
