Pioneer 420 recording/setup questions

460 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Benfica
OK, I'm about ready to record some stuff. I think I understand the basics of recording to HDD in whatever recording mode I'm going to use to record onto DVD. I got my 50 pack of "Made in Japan" Fujifilm DVD-R's.

Before I start, is there anything in the setup I need to tweak, either in the Video/Audio adjust, or the initial setup menu?

Specific questions:

1) If I set manual recording "On" in the setup menu, does it always use the manual setting I make there, or can various manual setttings be made for each recording?

2) How do I set chapter marks? Can this be done in the copy list or does it have to be done on the HDD? Somewhere it refers to "thumbnails" of chapter marks. How do I set these thumbnails? Do most people use the "Auto Chapter" marks which can be set up in the setup menu?

3) If I use the Copy List, is this video mode or VR mode? I am assuming video mode. Do most people here make all their recordings in video mode?

4) Do the "Playback settings" in the menu affect the recording at all, or ONLY playback (i.e. the TV Screen Size and Seamless PLayback settings)?

You can assign a different manual / predefined recording Setting for each recording.

Manual chapter marks:

are set by you after you have copied your program to HDD. You can do it either in the HDD (and then add that title to the copy list) or in the copy list itself.

Automatic chapter marks:

Are added automatically (in the interval defined) to the DVD-R(W) when you do a Real Time Copy from HDD to DVD.

Thumbnails:

This is the video frame that will appear in the DVD Menu per each title that the final DVD will have. You set these thumbnails by playing the title, hit pause in the frame that you want to appear in the menu, hit "Navi Mark" button on your remote. Simple as that.

This should be the last thing you do (to all titles in the copy list) before you do a high speed copy to DVD-R(W).

You can use copy lists for either Video mode or VR mode.

Video mode: used in DVD-R or DVD-RW media.

VR Mode: used in DVD-RW media.

You should use video mode for higher compatibility (if you want your recordings to be played in other players).

You should use VR mode, basically, if you want to put some titles in a DVD-RW (using High Speed copy) and then (later) put them back in your recorder HDD (using also High Speed copy)- a sort of lossless (temporary) backup of your HDD.

There are also other uses for VR mode, but I think that's not what you want to do.

Only playback.

As an advice: In your first recording to DVD, you could use a DVD-RW in Video Mode to see the final results. If everything is Ok (i mean, thumbnails, titles names, etc) then you copy from Copy List again to your final DVD-R.

(In my two first attempts to create a DVD-R I did something wrong, so I wasted 2 DVD-R, so that's why i suggest this).

Hope that helps.

Also chek this thread that has a lot of information that also is valid to you pioneer 420 recorder.

I don't think you can add chapter marks from the copy list(I can't anyway) unless you are erasing(erase section) commercials with A-B function which leaves a chapter mark.

You can change recording modes by repeatedly pressing REC MODE on your remote. When it shows manual recording you can also toggle through each MN speed with the up and down keys on your remote.
You can add chapter marks during playback of the video from the HDD. I find it much easier than using the divide function in chapter edit. However, chapter edit can be done both in the copylist and the edit mode.

Just wanted to note that the Pioneer lets you choose a thumbnail for each "title", not for each "chapter", as the Toshiba does.

Well, i think that my method works (anyway i will check it later), but anyway what you can do is (from the manual):

Chapter Edit (Chpt Edit) – Edit chapters within a Copy List title (see page 68):

•Erase– Erase a chapter.

•Divide– Divide a chapter into two.

•Combine– Combine two chapters into one.

•Move– Change the chapter order.

•Preview– Check the chapter content.

Using divide you can create any chapter marks that you want (up 99 per title).

Hope that helps

Thanks for your responses, guys...this clears up a lot of confusion on my part.

However, I am still confused on one thing...on page 65 of the manual (for example), it says "The chapter editing screen appears with thumbnails of each chapter." How are these thumbnails selected if the user cannot select them?

On the disc menu, how are the chapters shown? Or maybe I should ask, ARE they shown?
OK, I get what you are talking about. Pioneer actually calls those titles to differientiate the two, since you can add a thumbnail to those chapters. But on the hard drive you can press the CHP Mark button to create chapter marks that will not have an individual thumbnail in the menu.

You can use the NAVI MARK button on your remote to create a new thumbnail picture for that title/chapter. You can pause first to get an exact spot.

Also under initial setup it allows you to have automatic thumbnails for the thumnails at 0 seconds, 30 seconds, or 3 minutes. You can still change them with the manal navi mark button.

To have chapters/or titles shown with thumbnails in a movie you would need to use the divide function and create as many as you want and then use the navi mark during preview to create a new thumbnail for each one.

If you have multiple tv shows each show could be a chapter/title with a thumbnail. Just copy one show at a time to the copy list or use the divide function again if they are alreay in one title.

These thumbnails are the first frame of the video and is used only for editing purposes.

No, chapters are not shown in the disc menu.

This is how it works: a disc as 1 to "N" titles, a title can have up to 99 chapters. In disc menu only titles appear with a thumbnail and a title name.

Hope that helps.
