Really interested in this player, been waiting for a cheaper SACD player for some time. How's the video quality on this bad boy? Currenly own a Toshiba SD-3800. How does the SACD sound?

Also, where is the cheapest place in Canada to buy (online or not)? Future Shop sells it for $299.

Thanks in advance!

I love my 563A. I purchased it here in America and do not know about Canadian stores.

Video: Good overall, NO chroma bug, combing with improperly flaged discs, can't pass "blacker than black", no aspect ratio control or scaling.

SACD: Sound great to me, DVD-Audio too.

I thought the forum rules prohibit talking about prices and where to buy. Anyways because of supply and demand - you pretty much see the same price everywhere at the B&M stores for this player. Cripes it is $300 + taxes - take the dive. If you want to know how it sounds go to a B&M store other than the FS chain and properly audition it there and do the morally right thing and buy it from that store. There are many Pioneer dealers in the GTA if you live in that area. I don't even remember what I paid for mine.

I got mine at BB for $300. Future Shop is the same price. This is blatent price fixing IMO. Future Shop happens to be owned by BB. Convert this into US$ and you get about $220 US. Compare this to the $179 they charge at BB USA and you get the picture. I've heard many people talk about getting this player at $150-160US on sale! Oh, to live in this wonderful socialist paradise!

You may also want to consider the Pioneer Elite DV-50 which uses the same chassis (looks identical) as the 563 but has upgraded electronics. It sells for just a few bucks more. Wish I knew about the DV-50 before buying the 563.

On the topic of higher prices, it's important to remember we're a country with a population and economy a little smaller than California's. A market the size of Canada's can't have the same economies of scale as the entire U.S. So what's the solution? Canadians need to make more babies and a whole lot of them! ;)

What's a DV-50? There's nothing on Pioneer's web site about it, and googling for it doesn't turn up anything. Teac has a universal player with a DV-50 model number, but it's something like CDN$6000.

The only Pioneer Elite DVD player that I can find that does the DVD-A and SACD stuff is the DV-45A, at a whole lotta CDN more (at least, it lists for US$800).

If I'm looking in the wrong place, would you please post a link?

I mentioned this to the retailer - said "had I known, I wouldn't have picked up the 563" he also said that there is no info on the websites. If you live in Toronto - all I can say is check one of the four authorized retailers in the GTA. I've seen it at Audio Excellence Yorkville, Regency Audio (Markharm). Pioneer is coming out with a universal DV59Ai which there are threads on - I seen the spec sheets and on paper it looks very impressive - this is what caught my attention:

14bit video DACs.

720P or 1080i upscaled from 480P

Cost is TBA but will most likely go around the price of what the 47AI sells for now. I'll probably be picking this up continuing my merry go around of DVD Players in the past two years: Pioneer DV-37, Koss cheapo one, RP-82, Denon 1600, XP-30, Pioneer 563 and ???

OK, now I'm really confused. Are you talking about the as-yet-unannounced DV-59Ai, or something else called a DV-50? And since (in the quote above) you compared it price-wise to the 47Ai, which has an MSRP of US$1200: I don't find that to be just "a few bucks more" than the 563, with an MSRP of US$250. Are Universal players as out of whack as prescription drug prices in the US, or were you confusing the 563 (the model originally under discussion) with something else?

And apologies in advance, but I find it hard to believe that there's something called a Pioneer Elite DV-50 with "upgraded electronics", having all the capabilities of the 563, that's only marginally more expensive than the 563, and it's sitting on a Toronto dealer's shelf, with absolutely NO buzz about it on any of the home theater/audiophile web sites . . .

I don't live in Toronto, unfortunately; I hear it's a nice place. And I honestly don't mean to be nitpicky and grill you on the details, but I've got about 28 days left to return my DV-563A :)

Jeff,

No sweat, let me clarify

Pioneer Elite DV-50

There is indeed a Pioneer Elite DV-50 (unless I got the model number wrong but I'm pretty sure that is the model). This unit looks exactly (color and chassis) like the 563 except that it has "Elite" on the DVD ROM Tray. The price is a few bucks more than the 563 so about $300 - $350 CDN. The first time I heard about the player is seeing it in two different stores. Pioneer's websites are crap - they don't even have the Elite 45 on the Canadian site. So yes this is the real thing and I too wondered why there was no buzz for this unit. What blew me away is Pioneer putting on the "Elite" label on an arguably very entry level player.

Pioneer Elite DV59AI

This will be Pioneer's new flagship player. Should be available in a few weeks. The price will be around $1600 - $1800 CDN according to Elite Dealer. The $1600 - $1800 price is the about what the DV-47Ai sells for currently in Canada. I'm holding out for this model.

There is a possibility that the DV-50 may be a Canadian model only? Unlikely But if you think I'm smoking crack :) - give Pioneer Canada a call. I'm picking up a Xantech Connecting Block at one of these Pioneer Elite Dealers when it comes in. I'd be more than happy to take a digital picture of it - just for my own sanity!

I did a search of every major retailer's website, a google search, and a search of Pioneer's US and Canadian sites, and I couldn't find one mention of this player anywhere. Sorry, Eric, but I think you're smoking crack :)

Just saw the DV-50 today and didn't know what it was. I didn't realize it was similar to the 563A. I didn't get a price because the high-end store I was at was not very friendly. They don't deserve my business. :p

Now i have to research that one...

Glad you got some independent verification, Eric . . . I'm sure it's a relief to know that you didn't hallucinate it :)

I'm so blown away by my 563, though, that I think I'll hang onto it regardless. I really bought it as an intermediate player until more DVI/HDCP models were available anyway. The current crop seems to have its share of problems.

Best regards,

I've solved the case of the mysterious Elite DV-50 player. I went to pickup my Xantech connecting block from a B&M store today and there it was: the Elite DV-50 player. I asked how much and found out that it is only sold in a set with a matching (same size and color) "DVX-50" receiver that was right below it. Sorry folks, didn't bring my digital camera but trust me it looks exactly like the 563 except for the "Elite label" on the tray and the DV-50 model number silkscreened instead of the 563 model #. Both receiver and DVD player are packed in the same box. Canadian MSRP is $1200. This is probably why most people don't see it because it is a set and most dealers probably don't carry the set. And of course - there is no mention of this on the website.

Kind of on the same topic. The Panasonic XP-30 was never availabe as a stand alone DVD player here in Canada but only in a set with the matching receiver. Again both receiver and DVD player are shipped in the same box.
