Pioneer 59avi now or wait for new Oppo for 480i?

Hi,

I can get my hands on one of the last remaining Pioneer units here in Sydney

for a good price.

I want it for 480i through HDMI to my dvdo scaler.

I have heard that the new oppo is being released for this very purpose.

Should I wait and take a chance on the oppo unit being very good or grab

what is, a known quantity with the Pioneer.

Thanks

Damien

Do you care about analog (multi-channel) audio or iLINK (1394) digital audio connection for DVD-A or SACD?

If you plan only to use TOSLINK and no DVD-A/SACD interests, then the OPPO maight just fit the bill. But, no one knows how well the OPPO will perform. It has had many delays. Hopefully, they are making it right from the start.
Hi,

I am only interested in video performance.

Thanks

Damien
Wait for the Oppo. And, it will play DVD-A and SACD and should sound as good as others in the price range.

To which price range are you referring? Certainly the Oppo and Pioneer Elites are not in similar price ranges. Oppo comes in at $200 or less and the Elites are both $800 and over. That's a 4:1 difference.
If you use the player's DACs, I cannot believe the Oppo will match the Pioneer for audio.
Sorry for being ambiguous, I meant the new Oppo's price range. I'm guessing it will be less $$$ than the 971.

If it does, Oppo should charge a lot more $ for it. ;)
No i.Link (of course, no DenonLink) and whatever HDMI 1.1 will support.
