Hi, I was just about to buy a Sony DVP-NS700 today, but after browsing several threads here, I was impressed by the sound of the Pioneer DV-48AV and took the plunge and ordered one from Vanns. I am looking for a sub-$100 upconverting DVD player to use with my brand new Samsung LN40A550 LCD TV. I intend to use the player primarily for playing DVDs I already own. Do you think the Pioneer performs that much better than the Sony? What about reliability?

Thanks in advance.

Never owned a Pio DVD player but I've own several Sony players including the NS700 you're looking for. I really like the feature sets on the Sony players which include: Speed play, disc resume for 6 discs, all time display modes including chapter and title remaining, a zoom with easy pan and scan, basic universal remote functions, etc.

I've been using Sony players for years and haven't had one go bad yet. Can't say the same for 1/2 dozen different no name brands I tried in the past. They'd usually last a year or less. Oh the Sonys are also quite good as far as playing scratched or damaged discs like one might get at the library.

If you are a member of Costco they sell the Sony for $75 and include a HDMI cable, otherwise sometimes they are available B&M for $69 without the cable.

Can the pioneer play dual disk SACD's without any issues. I just ordered one and forget to check to make sure it can handle that jacked up disk.
