I can get a great deal on this tv and a free extended warranty. It has been a display unit since early march.

Any reason not to buy the display unit at a great price?

Calculate how many hours that display has been on and then subtract that number from 100,000. This will give you a good guess as to how much life you might be able to expect out of it.

I'd also give it a good working over and ensure there is no burn-in on the screen. Try to find a white image to display. Other than that, if it seems good to you then jump for it.

On the plus side, at least you won't have to worry about running the break-in slides/DVD.

if it is a great deal like around ~$2000 for a demo/display unit plus a free ext warranty past the 2 yr elite warranty plus a 30 day return period then buy it and give it a try out.

The KRP-500M is supposed to have noticeably superior picture quality, and you can get it at a great price. I'd recommend that over the display model, unless you're almost getting the PRO-111FD for free.

The KRP-500M only has better black levels compared to the 111FD and that difference is only perceivable in a light controlled room and/or low APL scenes. Beyond that, the other PQ attributes are visually identical.

FWIW - I picked up a display version of last years Panny TH-46PZ850U as well as a Pioneer PRO-111FD this week. I had a lot of trouble getting a nice picture out of the panasonic, but the Elite just looks amazing. Of course, I was hesitant about purchasing a tv that had been used as a display, but honestly I couldn't ever justify buying this set at the normal retail price, so it was either buy the display or don't get one at all. Needless to say, the panasonic will be going back to the store this weekend.

Obviously, I can't comment on any long term effects you might run into from buying a display unit, but I do know that I'm really glad I bought mine and haven't ran into any issues.
