Here come the next batch of receivers to support the advanced DTS and Dolby audio codecs. Pioneer has announced June 2007 as when we can start to see their line of products. now we just need to find a way to get the bits to these receivers!

Finally a new way to enjoy the Fox movies and even better --- play only the original tracks as they are encoded in the movies. The BD and HDDVD players seem to want to add all sorts or ridiculous extraneous popping sounds to the audio over reencoded to DTS or PCM and expect us to accept it.

If these guys really want to produce future proof AVRs, they should provide the ability to upgrade the firmware for the DSPs (via USB?) so that AVRs will last a decade, not just a couple of years.
this is not something they can easily update. HDMI needs to be updated to 1.3a (impossible via firmware-only) then the codec requires much faster processor (also can't be updated via firmware-only).

Absolutely. Forget USB, I'm willing to live with a serial port ...

No Reon or Realta. Pass for me

Yup, I've made up my mind a while ago that I'm done with anything Faroudja.

I rather get the Onkyo since they are about $400 cheaper.

and onkyo does both HD DVD and BD, unlike Pioneer's which according to the product's official press release , the receiver is optimised only for BD optical format. Not even a single word on HD DVD. So if HD DVD owners are thinking of pairing the two - look away and choose Onkyo instead

Typical BDA markeing stuff!

Wait a minute! HD DVD owners can already hear Dolby TrueHD in 5.1 glory! We don't need no stinkin' overpriced new receivers! Most US titles do not have DTS-HD MA anyway!

I don't understand how a receiver can be "optimized for BD"?

Greetings

Since the war is over and competing formats do not exist anymore ... it can only be optimized for BD.

Pioneer says so ok.

The new generation of HDMI, version 1.3a, has more than double the bandwidth capacity of its predecessors for extremely high speed transfer of uncompressed high definition video and audio resolutions. Sorry HDDVD people, but you'll get less than optimized experience.

Of course, thats just the marketing trash that many companies put out. "Uncompressed Video" !!

Look at Bose, they are the king of marketing trash!

Of course, HD-DVD doesn't have as many discs with lossless audio let alone PCM. Unless things change Blu-ray will be utilizing the fancy decoding of these new receivers more so than HD-DVD.
huh? HD DVD uses Dolby TrueHD, which is lossless and DD+, which requires "fancy decoding". PCM doesn't require "fancy decoding", just HDMI 1.1

Am I missing something here?
I'm talking sheer numbers of discs with lossless or PCM audio (Blu-ray wins handily). And some decoders have a problem with multi-channel PCM audio over HDMI.

Dan
what decoders? PCM = uncompressed = doesn't need any decoding! Lossless I can understand. But PCM?
But it will get run through the DSP chip for further processing (EQ, tone control, etc.). Some receivers and pre-amps, for instance, will not take certain resolutons and sampling rates, some won't take 7.1 PCM, some won't process 5.1 PCM to 7.1 via PL IIx or some other surround decoding algorithm, etc.

Dan
but that only relates to how the signal is being routed through. All processing in any receiver are done after decoding. There is no "optimization" involved at all.
I can't believe Pioneer is going to brand 2007 receivers "Elite" that incorporate Faroudja processing. Has the Pioneer "Elite" brand really fallen that far?

I can understand Faroudja processing in a $400-$600 receiver, but it is simply not acceptable in a $1600 receiver.
I agree. Unless it is some kind of "next gen" Faroudja?
