A close friend of mine is preparing to buy a Pioneer PDP-5030HD plasma TV. The local place he is buying it from is charging him $6800 out the door (before installation).

I did a quick search on Yahoo! Shopping and found that they are going for around $6000 delivered from many online retailers.

I also noticed that TVAuthority.com (an AVS Forum sponsor) sells this TV although they require that you call to get the price.

Anyway, my question is whether or not the online deals are really a good deal... Specifically, how can we know if Pioneer will honor their warranty if we buy from an online retailer? Pioneer's website only lists Crutchfield as an "authorized" online seller!

Are all the other online retailers who claim that you get the warranty lying?

Anyone's advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

you can buy the 5040 for under 6500 delivered from fairly reputable online dealers. the 5030 for under 6000. I bought my folks the 5030 lasty year from one of the online guys for less than 6500 delivered, I was looking at it this morning and was quite jealous. I am stuck with a pioneer elite rptv and it looks great when sitting in front of the set, but the plasma looks great from all over the room. If I was going to buy one today, i would buy online and sav e the $$$$$
