Pioneer SC 1323-K Questions

3841 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  mdavies1971
I recently purchased this receiver when it was on sale through Amazon for $599. Now that I have it home I have two questions.

1. There is a constant sound coming from the box itself. I assume it is the fan, but it seems much louder than any other receivers I've owned previously. However, I've only ever owned lower end AVRs, so that may be why it seems unusual to me. Even when there is no content being played, I can hear it across the room (10 ft away). I would compare it to the sound level of a PS3 or PS4. Is this normal? Is it a factor of the D3 amp design? I am trying to make sure it's not a defective unit while I still have time to return it.

2. When using Airplay, the connection will periodically drop out. It seems to happen inevitably after a long enough amount of time of playing a song (5-10 minutes). But if I do something on the iPhone it seems to increase the likelihood of it dropping out. I can't figure out what's going on with it. Any help would be appreciated.

I actually purchased the same receiver at the same price on sale. I am in the process of returning it.

1.) I did not hear any noise like you are describing from my unit. I was more unimpressed by the sound it sounded very distant when compared to my Onkyo 805, and therefore I am going to look elsewhere for an upgrade.

2.) I can't help you with Airplay as I don't have apple devices.

Thanks for the reply.

Would you say that the receiver is virtually silent?

I was also disappointed in the sound quality until I realized that there were multiple MACC memory settings, even in stereo mode. The sound was very bright with a lack of bass, but after fiddling with the settings I was able to get it to sound good. It is still a little to bright, but not terrible.
Not trying to hijack the thread - however, I have a question about the same receiver bought during the same sale. So far I absolutely love the device. My question is regarding the FM antenna connection. It came with a simple FM 2 wire with a couple crimped connectors on it - it clearly does not fit the provided connector. Which looks like this:

I've ordered two potential candidates in an attempt to find the correct connectors, however no luck.

Initially I ordered:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HRLY47U/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Too small.

Then I ordered:
http://www.firefold.com/coax-adapter-push

Also incorrect...

Any help appreciated

TIA

Tim

hi -

I also bought this receiver (same deal). This is for a new vacation house, so I am starting from scratch.

There doesn't seem to be an 'offical' SC1323 thread, so I'll post here

I need advise on what speakers and subwoofer to purchase.....

There will be three zones:

ZONE 1 + B: Greatroom where the main TV and media cabinet will be.

- The left and right front speakers are pre-wired in the lower wall on either side of the fireplace where the drywall is (see first picture below).

- The center speaker is wired above the TV. (I will have to drill through the slate to get to it).

- The media cabinet will be to the right of the fireplace (see picture - i now realize this was a horrible idea because it is going to get too hot) - not sure what to do now?

- This room has a high sloped ceiling, so although I wired the ceiling for two speakers, the set-up is not ideal for surround sound from the ceiling (see second picture). I am thinking of using the two ceiling speakers as "B" speakers for music only. I would then potentially have two floor speakers for the 4th and 5th surround sound speakers.

ZONE 2: Unenclosed Den area that is open to the great room where zone 1 is located (you can see it in the foreground of the second picture below). This room will eventually have a TV. The ceiling is wired for one speaker with a separate speaker control.

ZONE 3: master BR - This room is setup for a TV. The ceiling is wired for one speaker with a separate speaker control.

here's a floor plan showing where the wires and speakers are located.....

It's a push-on f-connector. Since you're using the supplied antenna, you'll need what's shown in post #3 of this thread:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2299178

They used to come with TVs. You should ask friends & family if they have one kicking around. If you were going to use RG6 wire, you'd need what's shown in post 5.

According to the manual that came on the disk, you just plug the included plastic antenna inside the inner hole of that connector and ignore the shielding around the outside.

I haven't tried it, so I can't confirm if it works or not.

I also recently purchased the Pioneer SC-1323-K. The question I have is whether it's possible to have a sub "on" while playing a stereo source. I've searched all of the settings and can't find a way to set up 2.1 sound while playing, say, a standard Redbook CD.

I have a 5.1 set-up which works fine with 5.1 material. I just can't get the sub to play with this receiver on stereo sources.

Any ideas?

yes

1. the best & preferred way is to set your front speakers to Small, regardless if you think they are full range. because very few speakers have true 20 hz bass capability and they are usually pretty expensive. if yours are good to 30-40-50, great, but that's not the whole LFE range which extends to sub 20 Hz. this is what Dolby, THX, DTS, Audyssey all recommend. with a crossover of 80 Hz unless you have satellites or small bookshelves with more limited bass capability, then you may look at 100+ Hz crossover. if your fronts can really go lower, then you could use crossover

2. if you are really resistant to this, then you can use the Plus sub setting but that probably will not be the best or smoothest hass response in the room due to wave interferences from the sub & speakers interacting with some freq's reinforced, some weakened and some just cancelling each other. see Pioneer's own notes in the manual on this. virtually all groups, companies, mfgs, calibrators, reviewers, do not recommend using a Plus or Double-Bass setting for optimum bass response. but it is there for you to experiment with, use if desired.

3. just select Dolby PLIIx Music (or Movie), DTS NeoX, or any THX, or Optimum surround modes. that will engage the sub by means of bass mgmt.

Thank you for this! However, I've tried it (front speakers set to small, crossover at 80 hz and the settings you mentioned in step 3) - all I get is stereo 2.0, not 2.1. I wonder if the unit isn't functioning correctly? Assuming you own the Pioneer as well, are you able to get 2.1?

I'm using an Oppo BDP-83 as a transport with an HDMI connection directly in to the SC-1323-K.

In a perfect world, I would have the Pure Direct setting selected with the low frequencies going to the sub.

this may be the reason IF you are using Pure Direct. Pure Direct plays exactly what's on the disc, stereo stays stereo, 5.1 stays 5.1, etc. no bass mgmt, MCACC EQ turned off, so no subwoofer on 2 ch sources.

use Direct mode instead

I have this same problem. Anybody figure it out. No sub on stereo sources

Anybody have an answer to this question????
I have this receiver SC-1323. I have the blinking MC ACC light and the receiver won't turn on. The sequences listed for the reset in other Pioneer receiver forums don't match this receiver. Does anyone know the sequence for this one.
