The Pioneer SE-A1000 can hold its own against heady competition, such as AKG's K701/702 but at a much lower price point. However with a price of $46.97 on Amazon , I'd say it's literally impossible to find a better headphone for less money—true full-range, audiophile quality for under $50 is a rarity.

A number of other retailers are selling them for between $50 and $65, including Sears for $59 . I originally noticed them at a Best Buy Magnolia on Clearance for $60, but I had them price-matched to Amazon.

Those are both closed-back, studio-oriented headphones. The SE-A1000 has a more expansive soundstage, and sounds airier, but bass rolls off a bit quicker. The huge earpads and open-back design make the SE-A1000 much more comfortable for long session listening, but they don't block any external noise. The SE-A1000 is a very different design vs. the two models you mention.

This is one of the most engaging headphone models I have ever listened to, but bass-lovers used to full-sized closed-back headphones might not like the way open-back designs sound in general. When compared to the highly popular AKG 701/702 series, the Pioneer compares very favorably at a fraction of the price.

Love these headphones. Great for movie watching and music. Movie/TV Dialog is the best I've heard on any headphones. Anyone one else have them? I wonder if there is an upgraded version?

I had them for a short time and they did sound very nice, but the fit was not good for me. They seem to be designed for people with HUGE heads. Any slight head movement and they were sliding on my head.

That's a shame. I was looking to see if Pioneer made another open back one that was as good as this one, but I don't think there is. I don't have a large head, but they fit ok after a mod: http://www.head-fi.org/t/670454/pioneer-se-a1000-sennheiser-hd-650-for-45

Okay

I used to have these phones.

They are not very comfortable. But with some modding they can be made okay.

SQ is excellent for USD 50. They are comparable to HD 518/558 I'm fidelity.

They don't compete with HD 598/DT 770/AKG Q701. Not even close.

But considering those phones are usually around USD 150 or so, anything under USD 100 is a passable deal for these Pioneer phones.

So it is like getting USD 100 worth of phones for USD 50.

I had the Senns 580(Had to sell them for money reasons :( ) and The Pioneer is very close in sound. I think these were over 200 when they came out. Still for 50 a heck of a bargain. They might be my favorite headphone ever and I've owned alot. Sibilance Is a Issue with most headphones even expensive ones, but not these and they are cristal clear.
