I've recently bought a Pioneer VSX-1020-K and overall I'm very happy with it. However, when watching some BluRay/DVDs the audio mix is really bad. In order to hear normal talking I need to turn the volume up, but then when the action starts explosions and gunfire are way too high. We watched the Book of Eli this weekend and had to move between -25db and -35db depending on the scene. We got the same results from both BluRay and DVD, although they're played on different devices.

I've run the auto-calibration and also tried cranking up the front center speaker which helped but didn't solve the problem.

Any suggestions?

How many positions did you run on the auto cal?

It usually helps with this. But more often then not this is a room issue and would require some outside expertise to help with it.

I suppose the AVR could just have diminished output on the center?
