Pioneer VSX-49TX 7.1 surround setup without remote

I am brand new to setting up any sort of audio systems, so sorry in advance if this is a silly problem, but!
I am trying to set up 7.1 surround with my vsx-49tx but can only get it do do 5.1 surround. Looking through the manual it seems like in order to get 7.1 surround you have to do setup using the remote control. Unfortunately, I do not have the remote control for the device (been handed around too many times). Is there anything I can do without buying a $100+ remote off of eBay? Thank you for helping out.
