Pirates Won't Play on Sony BDP-S1

Pirates Won't Play on Sony BDP-S1 After waiting MONTHS for these titles to come out I was seriously disappointed that Pirates Black Pearl won't play on my Sony BDP-S1. I updated the firmware last night to 1.60 and it STILL won't play. It sorta starts to load -- sometimes the gold coin comes up, but then NOTHING HAPPENS!!! Anyone else having this problem? Anyone else have any suggestions? I called Sony and they (of course) outsourced my call to India where the person on the phone had NO CLUE what she was talking about. Kept telling me to unplug the player and update the sofware (neither of which worked!) BTW -- Pirates Dead Man's Chest wouldn't play before the firmware upgrade but now, after the upgrade, it plays but TAKES FOREVER to load and you can't skip the previews!!! UGH!!! HELP!!!!!!!

First, make sure your POTC is clean. Then load it, 3x scan through the intro crap until you get to the blank spot. Wait a good long time and it will probably load the menu. Select play movie on the left; never select the right option or top menu. If you get nothing after a good long wait, try the chapter forward button which may get you to the play (pop-up) menu. It is a ridiculous PITA, but you should be able to get it to work. Once you get the pop up menu and the movie going, you are home free.

Wow, is this a disc og player problem?
You better buy a PS3 now that it has upscaling
I have seen others posting with similar problem - all of those cases were resolved by upgrading to the latest firmware.

I had similar problems with the same (latest, 1.60) firmware.

Sorry, cannot comment on this besides just redirecting you to the posts on this and Blu-Ray forum like this one: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=8953&page=2 . I realize that thread is about a Samsung player, but I think the root of the problem is the same and therefore it will be resolved similarly - by a firmware update.

I personally have a PS3 which luckily did not need any firmware to play either Pirates disc.
I was able to play the movie after a few tries, but it is still definitely screwed up. There is no way except 3x scan to get past all the previews, etc., and the main menu takes an excessive amount of time to load. On one occassion it appeared to be stuck right before the initial menu, but maybe I just did not wait long enough. DMC seemed to work a little better, but still needs work.

Geeeeze - it's getting real complicated (and time consuming) just to get to the start of the friggin film.
Guess I have to allow about 5 minutes to cue it up before I let guests enter the theater. (My wife last night kept saying "what's wrong? - why's it taking so long?" - For which I replied "don't ask."

Just posted new thread about apocalypto not playing on sammy 1000 with latest firmware. Seems all these are buena vista films. could be a Java problem.
Disney has went right along with their SD DVD ways, 15 plus mins of crap before you can get to the menus which take forever to load, on top of that Java is the biggest joke by far from either format, it is just sad

wish I could get it to play all the garbage just will not load.

Too bad apocalypto is not BD-J authored.

There's a reason why the PS3 is the most reliable and problem free of all BD players. It is probably the first and most important player the studios test their software on for compatibility. But folks who are anti-PS3 for BD player will never consider one because it doesn't have analog audio out or IR remote or it doesn't look like a fancy standalone.
The menu seems really sluggish.

After I hit play movie on the menu, everything seems fine though.

Yes, it is very frustrating.
Really slow load times for both films but I did get them to work (even on my BDP-S1 with ancient firmware v.1.50 - should be receiving v.1.55 from Sony in a few days).

I first popped in Curse of the Black Pearl. Took forever (black screen, spinning coin, black screen, promos, more black screen...lol) but finally got to the movie. After watching a few scenes I ejected the disc and immediately threw in Dead Man's Chest...nada. Interminable black screen. Ejected tray and then reloaded...nada. Interminable black screen. Ejected disc, POWERED DOWN BDP-S1, powered up machine, inserted disc...Ta-Da!!! The spinning key appeared, and then, after a short while of black screen, promos and the like, I finally got to the movie.

And man, stay away from the onscreen menu selections!!! Sheesh!!! For Curse it took me forever to choose PCM, and then for some reason I had English for the hearing impaired subtitles to contend with. It took a while to get rid of those, as well. When I finally got Dead Man's Chest to play I did all my menu selections (actually it was just choosing PCM audio) through the remote. Much, much faster.

Again, I'm running my BDP-S1 on firmware version 1.50. Maybe I wouldn't be having the extent of my problems with newer versions (although from these posts I'm aware that owners with even the newer versions are having issues). Oh, well, once it's running the films look and sound great (the few scenes that I watched).

You know, it's problems like this that are going to keep both formats from catching on with the general public. The general public doesn't now about firmware updates (much less actually updating the firmware) and isn't going to deal with there new players not playing new releases every few months. How long is it going to take both BD and HD DVD before you can be confident that the new movie you just purchased will play without a hitch? I'm not talking about some new advanced special feature to come in the future, just the basic playing the movie and menu operation. Both formats continue to have these stupid problems that require firmware updates every few months, it's ridiculous. Don't give me that early adopter BS either. My first DVD player back in 1997 played every DVD I bought with out a problem until I upgraded it in 2003. We are quickly coming up on a year for both formats, this stuff should have been worked out by now. I feel sorry for those who can't even get POTC to play and hopefully the problem will be resolved quickly. My POTC disc play fine but they are the slowest loading disk I have ever seen plus, the menus are the slowest and most sluggish menus to navigate that I have encountered on BD to date (COTBP being the slower of the two).

/end rant.

Although, once you get through all the headaches of loading and slow menus, the PQ kinda makes it worth it. My main point is, if either format wants to be taken seriously by the general public, this type of stuff has to stop occurring.

Face it guys. We are the guinea pigs and the lab rats since we're the early adopters. They use us to find the glitches, and then by the time J6P may be interested most of the kinks have been ironed out.

well thats great but this guy most likely paid a grand for this player, you would think thats the last issue to come up.i hope by the 3rd gen. these players play movies with zero issues. a warning to both formats, make players that work,no issues, that is if you want to win the war!! another thing hdmi needs to work out there issues.i think a lot of issues is caused by hdmi and not so much the player or hdtv.
Also have a BDp-S1 with 1.6. Both discs took forever to load, like at least 2 minutes, then dealt with the forced trailers, then I had to wait another good 30 seconds to get the menu. Both did play eventually.
