I want to order a Panny s97, read the review on the first page, sound good. Then in the forums, its all Macro Blocking issues, I going to order a Panny 42 TH42PX50U, but what now, where does a guy go to get a good DVD player with a GREAT picture for $300.00 bucks, is there even one, it seem like you got to spend $700-900 for a super one. Well I just want a good one with no issues for my panny for around $300.00 I still have to buy good cables too. I think that its stupid that Panny sells a plasma that is not even compatible with its DVD player, I thought those people would of figured this all out

I just want to be amazed with picture quality and not unhappy with anything for the money I am spending, please help
Sony, Toshiba and Samsung do not have macroblocking issues...........
Denon 2200/2900's on videogon/audiogon. The older Panny's too like XP30/50 and RP series. You will be impressed with the performance these offer. Particularly, the used 2200 for instance on videogon has low hours. ;)
A used Denon 1600 would be a good choice also.

The Panasonic DVD-S97S is a very good player and it is unfortunate that macroblocking problems result with some of their own displays. That is certainly not a reason to avoid offering a player that works great with many Panasonic and other company displays. The Sony DVP-NS70H is an inexpensive player with HDMI that works great with my displays but has some issues with other displays, you might give it a try if an inexpensive HDMI upscaling player for DVD video only is what you want.

Just stay clear of the Oppo 971...Macroblocking hell on Panny 7UY. I'm in the same boat as you...Got this superb Plasma but dvds look like sh#@! on it....Just find the best DVD WITHOUT Faroudja chips in it. I'm still looking for one in the affordable 300$ lower range...I won't go for a 600$ DVD player sorry not THAT crazy.... ;)
Well What Is That Dvd Player Then

Try Denon DVD-2900. Should be about $300 used.
Denon 2900's on Audiogon don't last long at all under $500. They offer excellent component output and are popular players to mod for audio. There's a 2200 and a 1600 on Videogon under $300 and a couple 1600s on Audiogon at the lowest prices of the bunch.

You could always put part of the blame on the Panny plasmas...since they seem to be the worst at showing all the MB issues...

You're correct. Looks like these have been holding their value well. ~$450 would probably be more likely. Those other Denon's you recommended should serve the original poster well, along with the Panasonic XP30/XP50.

I too feel that particular plasma is going to show contouring or banding problems that folks might mistake as "macro-blocking". That's just an inherant flaw with many plasmas.
The Denon does not have an HDMI output. What is a good DVD player for my Panny 42- TH42px50u. I not sure what to get a Denon 2900 - no HDMI- (shouldnt I take advantage of the HDMI on my plasma), the panasonic s97 (MB), The Oppo (MB), the Sony (shift issues). I dont want to spend more that $300.00 I have a bad wife-blocker with my system, I don't know if you guys of had this trouble with your system, its like when you spend too much money, some how yelling in the background from you know who distorts PQ.
"Bad wife-blocker" Ha that’s good, got to remember that one!

Seriously try the Sony! The "SHIFT PROBLEM" is way over rated! And for about $149.00 it gets by blocker filter with ease! And on my Panasonic DLP display on 1080 you can see the shift issue but it's not on every DVD and then not very bad so with the OUTSTANDING PQ I get and the awesome price Im very ok with it.

The PQ IMHO is better than my friends High $$$$$ up converting player.

Pick your poison. You have a tall list of demands for under $300. I think you'd do fine with the Denon DVD-1600 or Panasonic RP-82/XP50/XP30 for about $300. Even though they are all component, the overall picture quality will likely be better than any player that uses HDMI output under $1000.

What is your opinion regarding how DVDs played on a Oppo OPDV971H with DVI --> HDMI to a Panasonic 50PX50U will look?
I just sold a XP-30 in excellent condition for $199 shipped.

I see some folks asking $250 + shipping, but right around $200 seems to be the market.

Check Videogon. Ebay and our own AVS marketplace, which requires a membership.

Chizzain: If you don't mind the cost of shipping both ways, you could try the OPPO and then return it if it doesn't work out. Buying from Amazon would only cost you the shipping back. I say this because the OPPO is among the best at reducing the appearance of MB, especially if you use the brightness/contrast controls into the (- negative) settings when calibrating. Basically you can buy from Amazon, and test drive the OPPO for $10, the cost of return shipping. IMHO, it's worth it and maybe you will find the OPPO can be tweaked to work with your display.

I wish I knew more about the other current non-Faroudja based upscaling players.

Good luck

I personally haven't seen the Oppo with a Panny plasma, but general consensus is that these plamas exaggerate the MB problem with the Faroudja chip in the Oppo. I'd probably still go with one of the older Denon's or Panasonics. HDMI would seem to have neglible benefits with this plasma as none of the Oppos resolutions are the same as the panels "native" resolution. Either way you do it (HDMI or 480p component) the plasma is gonna have to scale the image. Might as well give it a near-pristine image to start with in the form of the above mentioned Denon's or Panasonic players.
I have a Panny 42 TH42PX50U and a Denon 1920 hook via component and it looks great. When we got the set my salesman told me to try this first if not happy bring back and we will go from there. He is a total Denon guy and has always been fair and the best to deal with. The 1920 is a work horse that's doing the trick. The sound gets overlooked in the quest and I would keep this machine for that alone. I too was ready to spend much more and even had the packing box and every thing ready to return it before I even hooked it up. Fooled me I like it. Is it perfect? No. But some times the sales guy is right and if not then take it back and start over. You will get it right and be happy when you do.

Mine goes to a 7UY, but personaly i really don't like it....It's really a Macroblocking festival....And i am starting to get annoyed with it....I had better results with my 89$ JVC-XN44, wich i'm thinking of putting back on....I'm starting to think that Oppos are overhyped. I jumped on the bandwagon when it came out, maybe i was to fast doing so...

What's the Sony model talked about ?
