I built my current HT a few years ago (2007) and when I built it I put in a PT-AE700U which I absolutely loved.

Well now we're moving and the HT equipment is staying with the house we are selling....so daddy gets to build another HT :). I'm on a limited budget of about 5K for the entire HT. I'll probably build another Dayton HT speaker set and pick up a used Denon receiver on Ebay. My HTPC is also staying behind so I have to build another one.

I have been looking at some of the newer PJ's and I am blown away with the pricing. I'm not absolutely sure, but I think I paid around 2K for the AE700. Looking at current PJ's I see 1080P's listed for $999

I have never seen a 1080P projected image so I'm not sure how much difference there is between 720P and 1080P

At first I thought about getting the AX200 since it should provide a better picture then the AE700 which I loved. But now I'm wondering if I should just spend a little more and go with a 1080P PJ. Budget wise I would prefer a $1K PJ because It will allow a little breathing room for seating, DIY screen, HTPC, and my audio build

I'm figuring budget wise:

$1K for construction materials including building a screen

$1k for seating

$300 for the AV receiver

$700 for my 5.1 speaker build

$500 for the HTPC

This should leave about $1500 for a PJ

I was hoping I could get some suggestions. Our HT viewing is about 70% DVD, 20% HD Dish network, and 10% Blu-Ray (via a cheap $60 china-mart BD player) . These figures will probably change with more BD use now that we have netflix with BD movies. Would I be better off with a good $1k PJ like the AX200U and an OPPO BDP-83 to upscale to 1080P, or would my money be better spent on a $1500 1080P PJ like the PT-AE3000

I think i have it narrowed down to 3 choices on my budget of $1500.

any suggestions between the ax200 and the HD20 and then add an OPPO BDP-83 for it's ability to upscale dvd's.

Or keep my cheap wal-mart BD player and go with an AE3000

I have never seen a DLP PJ so I don't know if I am sensitive to the rainbow effect. I'm leaning towards the AX200 because I was very happy with the AE700 and i'm sure the picture on the AX200 will be even better.
