Hey guys, i was curious if there are any reputable places to have a box custom built for HT use. I know eD does custom box for car audio.

Basically i'm comfortable assembling an HT sub, but i neither have the tools nor the knowledge to properly assemble/design the box.

My goal would be to produce something with noticeably higher output than my eD A2-300, as well as better sound quality. I wanted to go with a sealed box, but as i understand that pretty dramatically reduces output?

What kind of budget would i have to be looking at to acheive my goals? $500/$600?

I was thinking something in the range of a sealed 15" sub designed to handle 500w-800w?

Define what you mean by "box"... are you talking about just the wood, or are you talking about everything (wood, driver, amp, etc)?

If you just need a box, your best bet would be to check out local custom cabinet makers. If you provide them with drawings of what you need, they can give you a cost estimate to build it for you.

If you are talking about the everything, you are in the wrong area - this area is for the Do It Yourself crowd. If you just want a kit to build yourself, you would be better off in the Subwoofer forum.

Match it up with either a Dayton 500w amp, Bash500 or O-audio 500w amp.

You could also save a couple dollars and buy dual 12's instead.

here is a build kind of like what you describe:

There's no reason you couldn't use a custom ED box for home use other then you would have to finish it. A 22"x22"x26" braced box cut for a 15" would cost $254, place a Dayton RSS390HF-4 in there and you would get an F3 of 30hz, F10 17hz anechoic. Get one of the 500W amps like the O Audio and your set.

Thats kinda what i was wondering if was a possibility was to do something along those lines ;-).

Can you explain what the F3 and F10 means? or direct me to somewhere i can read up on these things?

Sorry i didn't explain better, i mean just the physical wooden enclosure. I have no issues wiring/sodering, etc etc. i just don't have all the woodworking tools neccesary to just grab a bunch of MDF and build a box out of it.

All in all that comes to around a $700 setup, probably a bit more when factoring in shipping. How would that compare to an equivalent $700 ish range sub like for example the A5-350 @ $800, which is essentially what i would be building, just sans the porting.

F3 is the -3db point of the subs natural response, F10 is the -10db point. If you have any kind of room gain a sub like this will extend flat very deep as you can expect to pick up those rolled off frequencies. A ported box would have its response completely drop off after its tunning point.

What i was going to do first before i decided to build mine was to buy a box prebuilt off e-bay.

They have some really large enclosures for 15" or 18" that if you adapt it with a wooden adaptor ring you could put a nice 12" in a larger prebuilt cabnet for an 18"

Just before i decided to pull the trigger on one i decided i wanted to put the subs behind my screen and that required a special size.

OK, then you are in the right place.

There are a couple of threads here where people had enclosures build for them instead of doing it themselves (for example: exojam's AV15H enclosures ). If you poke around you will find a few and if there isn't enough info in the thread you could just ask them where they got the boxes.

Of course, you'll need to decide on the driver and amp first, but as you can see you will have plenty of help for that...

this would actually make for a great sticky thread topic.

"directory of local custom subwoofer builders."

this would be great for the economy too, as custom work is typically not outsourced.

you could have:

i. subwoofer enclosure cutters--these could be folks with cnc machines or otherwise who can cut and deliver "flat packs".

ii. enclosure assembly/finishing--these could be folks with clamps, glue, routers, and veneer.

iii. components assembly--these could be folks who will wire up the enclosure with the driver, plate amp, and/or speakon terminals.

iv. soup to nuts--like it sounds, provide a whole custom package from design to delivery and service.
