How many inches does a rear ported speaker need to be from the wall behind it ? I've been reading conflicting things. I'm considering the Sony Core SS-CS5 bookshelf speaker. It would sit on a 1X12 shelf, so it would probably have 3-4 inches between the rear of speaker and the wall.

Check the user info for the speaker - Sony might provide a recommendation on this. It does depend somewhat on the speaker design, but 3-4 inches in my opinion is pretty close. But if you don't have a choice, you don't have a choice. You could always look for a front-ported design.

you may be able to place a "bung": a foam plug, into the port. many rear ported speakers come with this option... you may be able to make one as well.

Thanks. Would this affect this sound ?
I think it would sound like a bit of a decrease in bass output, afaik (less "boomy"), but it might also result in tighter-sounding bass?

I may make the output more sealed(speaker)-like. due to its commonality, it appears to be a reasonable trade-off.

Yes, better time response. Now, it might have more or less distortion at various frequencies, depending on the power level. But if used with a sub, I'd sure be trying this.

Anyway, I'd place a lot more importance on getting the best sound overall up into midbass, midrange, treble. The "blocking" of the port by a rear wall should not be a huge factor if crossed over to a sub. I'd also put some kind of a little pointed cone on the wall behind as a diffusor, kinda like Polk's Power Port.
