can somebody tell me, approx how much a month it cost to run a plasma? Say if you run it 5 or 6 hours a day, anybody have an idea on how much your electric bill goes up? Thanks

You don't mention which model you are interested in. Here is a link to someone measuring the power requirements of a 42pwd7uy vs a 20" lcd and a 27" crt. This plasma required the equivalent power of about 2 1/2 60Watt light bulbs. Hardly worth worrying about and probably close to the power required by a 32" CRT TV.

I have posted before my measurements of the power consumption of my Panasonic commercial TH-42PHD7UY 42" plasma which was an average of 140 Watts - which I see the link to was just posted. In short, the power consumption of the latest generation Pannys and Pioneers will be quite modest while the Korean and Taiwan plasmas are likely to be higher. Look up the max rated power consumption of the plasma you are considering and figure on running at 40 to 50% of that for typical in-home use.

The impact on the monthly electric bill of a plasma compared to a large CRT may be a wash, but we can't tell you what it will do to your electric bill without numbers. Figure out what you pay per Kilowatt-Hour, make an guess estimate of the power consumption of the TV and break out the calculator. Don't forget that most of the power consumed ends up as heat so a TV (or any electronic gear) which draws a lot of power will heat the room up.

I know when i fire up the akai the lights dim for a split second....haha

Also if your worried about the electric bill and you want to buy a plaz, you have enough fund's not to worry about it

not really worried, just curious. I just moved and i never had to pay an electric bill before, just wondering how much a month a plasma would add to the bill.
It won't be hardly noticed if you have an electric water heater, an electric clothes dryer, an electric range and electric heat. Good luck with your first bill. : :D:D:D

Lew
I have all of the above in my house, except i use a pellet stove to heat my house.........:D otherwise my bill would be over $300 a month, instead it's under $100
My wife watches roughly 6 hours of TV a day. Our bill in our apt (700 square feet) is steady at around $50 a month. Since this will be your first electrical bill, you probably won't notice the difference when it's lumped in with the hardware lewlew mentioned. :)

actually i dont have any of that hardware, so i guess my bill shouldnt even be a concern ,thanks
I have all electric...Refrigerator, A/C and Heat, Washer/Dryer, etc.

With the plasma on about 7 hours per day, washing and drying clothes about 2 times per week, most lights turned on all the time and usually one more tv on in the condo, my electric bill is about $60-$70 per month.

The same exact bill as when I had a 53" rearprojection tv.

I see NO increase in my Electric bill with the plasma.

Neither do we don'tdothat88. All we have is a microwave, our tv, 2 dvd players, cable box, receiver, xbox, fridge, and electric stove. :) Heat is steam, washer/dryer is in a common area, etc. You'll be fine!
