say,

how many of you have owned a plasma for more than 3 yrs already, and find it still as good as you have first bought it?

Not sure if plasma can truly last 60,000 hours w/o suffering any drops of the quality (brightness/contrast), etc.

That;s the main concern I have now that prevents me in jumping into the plasma wagon. Right now still considering 37" Sharp LCD, although after seeing the quality in one store, i am reconsidering again :(

3 years would typically be about 7000 hours... a far cry from 60,000.

I'm quite sure that any new plasma bought today and treated with even a modicum of respect will look sensational in 3 years.

There were demo units at a store near me that I got to see with at least that many hours. They were juxtaposed against new plasmas. The old ones looked equally great.

Are there any display technologies that don't suffer any drop of quality in the brightness and contrast with 60,000 hours on them?

10345 + Hrs and still going strong.

Right Dave ??? :D
Right BruZZi!:)

I am trying to push it hard because I want to know myself.

I also want to get a new one, possibly a 50+ LCD, but that is a wait and see proposition.

cool!

10,000 hrs and if it's still looks good, then it's a good assurance for a start!

I am worry tt the quality is not lasting, or am I expecting the impossible?

Looks like I should really drop the idea of 37" LCD, and go for the Panny EDTV 37" (it cost around $3500 now)

Right now thinking of going for EDTV 37" now, wait for a 50" LCD TV in few years time, and move the EDTV into my bedroom. By then, my EDTV would probably be used 3-4 hours a day (from estimated of 6-12 hrs a day), hence prolonging the lifespan of the plasma TV further, does it make cents (sense) ? :)

The Panasonics I have at work are well over 17,000 hours now and still look great. I know it isn't even close to 60k (or the 30K they were rated at when we got them), but it's interesting to note.

JR, no, everything loses something. A lamp-based system loses brightness as the lamp ages. Sometimes new lamps can be added, but then they lose brightness over time.

Obviously, no TV lasts forever. Ten great years -- or even 20 -- is more than anyone rationally needs.

Respectfully disagree: the backlights in LCD's will lose brightness and eventually fail: most consumer backlights are not easily replaceable

Most (all?) plasmas have builtin hours counter so that consumers could save on a stopwatch. :D

With my Fujitsu 50" 5002.

November will be three years of almost daily use. I'll need to go into the service mode to see the timer and validate the accumulated hours.

I am sure there is some parameter which has slipped - but I cannot identify which one. It remains bright, saturated and artifact free. I also cannot perceive any dead pixels.

This level of image quality persisting for this time frame is consistent with what were my expectations. These are well engineered units and should last for quite a while.

I think of myself as someone who watches quite a bit of TV. I bought my panel in October 2001, and last I checked it had 2300 hours on it. It's still below 3K for sure. Which when you think about it is still 3 hours per night. Unless someone's home to watch during the day, I really think that the average person won't put all that many hours on their panels.

30,000 hours is A LOT of TV watching - and even then the panel's not useless, it's just half as bright. Not to worry, I run my contrast very low as a preference anyways, which probably means it would last even longer than 30K hours to half brightness.

Looks like Dave's an exception, and I know in the past that Ofer's been packing the hours away on his panel.

thanks for all the feedbacks!

come to think of it, if I watch tv/dvd 6 hrs daily on weekdays, and 18 hrs daily on Sat & Sun, I would have watched 3482 hours only in a year. To reach 1/2 of the plasma lifespan (i.e. 60,000hrs), I have to continue watching in the above pattern for 10 yrs .. and I don't think I can afford to do that. Need to work to pay off the plasma

Btw, how much is it to repair/replace the light tube for LCD?

The replacement of the lights in an LCD is a huge unknown.

There are dozens of backlights in a large LCD (roughly 2 dozen to be more specific). No one has owned one long enough to even need a replacement of the lamps. Whether they will be reasonable or now remains to be seen. At $50 apiece, it would run $1200.... At $10 each, just around $250 -- note, the lamps themselves cost $10 when bought in quantity 10,000 and up... So it ain't gonna be that cheap, just illustrating.
