Plastic end cap on packaged speaker wire preventing upgrade...

6216 Views 13 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  raf_far
I recently ordered the Samsung HT-HDP40 HTIB online and it was just delivered and as I was unpacking it, I noticed that the packaged speaker wires have some sort of color coded plastic adapters on one end of each of the wires that connect to the receiver. I had planned to upgrade to at least a 16 gauge wire but I am not sure if this is possible now because of these plastic adapters. Does anybody know if there is a way to remove these plastic adapters and put them on to a heavier gauge wire? This seems to be unique to Samsung brand HTIB's and receivers.

How about a picture of the cable and the terminals? Not all of us are endowed with a Samsung HT-HDP40 HTIB.

I'm back home from college at the moment and don't have access to a digital camera, but once I get back home I will definetely get you all some pics!
"Upgrade" to 14 gauge? LOL. Sounds like the puny wires that came with

my Cerwin Vegas.

Take a good look at the receiver and speaker terminals and see if there is

anything to prevent you from fastening larger bare wire to the terminals.

Maybe the plastic color coding is just "idiot proofing"? If the terminals are

posts or the kind that have a hole that require you to push on the clamp

then usually they will accomodate 14 gauge. Find a bud that has a stray

piece of wire in the gauge you want and see how it works?

HTH.

I saw that receiver somewhere and the speaker connections are unique with no spring clip or binding post. I think he's screwed.
You can always splice farther down the wire. A foot of small ga wire wont hurt things a bit.

That said, why bother? How far does the signal have to travel? If its less than 25 feet or so, theres no need to upgrade.
are you using that with a HDTV? if so, i've heard HORRIBLE things about the dvd player in that system, like it upconverts horrible and other bad things. the only person that i know that purchased one returned it, for the reason above, and honestly i would recommend doing the same and get something better for the same price...
If you are dead-set on messing with the wire, then your easiest option is to follow JohnR_IN_LA's advice.

But as he also said, if the lenght is no more than 20-25 feet, it is very unlikely you would notice any difference. You might not notice even if the distance was more than that...
I have dealt with those Samsung adapters before and there seem to be two sizes in common use. One will accept up to 16 gauge wire and the other only up to 18 gauge. Normally the size wire that comes in the original package is the largest the adapter is designed to handle. You can always cut some excess strands from 16 gauge if it doesn't fit.
I've got the Samsung HT-HDP40 player. I'm having an issue with 'black crush'. It's hooked up to a 42" Philips plasma TV (42PF7320A/37). The latest firmware upgrade seems to have solved some of it. I've also lowered the contrast and brightness below 50 (on the Philips). I'm going to order one of the calibration discs (Design Essentials or Avia) to see if that eliminates the problem once and for all. Overall, I think it's a good system.

Please don't hijack threads - it isn't nice. Feel free to start your own, though.
I had a Sony HTIB that had the color coded connectors for the speaker wire as well. My guess is that it would be a waste to change out the speaker wire for larger guage. It seems to me that if you "splice" thicker wire into the little stuff, you wouldn't get any benefit, and if you were to cut enough strands of thicker wire to get it to fit into the smaller connector, again you defeat the purpose of having the thicker wire in the first place.

Go with the provided wire, i'll bet it will sound fine.

My problem is somewhat similar: My room is wired so ideally all I need is to connect the speaker wire to the back of the receiver.

I have looked in several places for the same type of connector including Radio Sh. with no avail.

What solution did you find for your problem?
